Does anyone know how Chorus decides which dropbox to use for the fibre installed on the street?

For some reason they chose to wire ours to our neighbor's house which would require installation to go through our wall, front yard and possibly the deck or driveway. When the technician took a look he said if it was hooked up to our dropbox instead it can be wired into the house with our copper cables but when asking Chorus the fibre installation was cancelled.

Do we have to pay to change the dropbox due to Chorus installing it to the wrong house?
Quite annoying, whoever decided on the dropboxes when installing did a pretty crap job.

We are going to be changing ISP's soon and thinking of trying for the installation again after it is swapped over. However, are we just going to end up with the same issue where the Chorus technician advises that if it is connected to our dropbox it can be set up easier but to change to the correct dropbox would have to be charged?

When you say dropbox do you mean the small black microducting that Chorus have installed on the road frontage? Could you take a few pictures of the setup and post those?

My parents had the same situation - they managed to convince Chorus to change which side of their property they were served from. No charge, but took a while because a different team did the work outside their boundary

I was also in this boat with expectation fibre would follow the same path as my underground copper - but alas no.

I have a corner section and copper comes from the side road along with neighbours, but fibre network was designed for my place to come from the main road requiring me to trench across my property....not a biggy luckily.

Over the course of 6mths and trying to follow the copper, found the microduct box up the pole had no capacity for my property and I would have had to pay to change this etc. Also discovered that the grey plinth that serviced my copper was in fact on the neighbours property hidden in garden preventing fibre being pulled though.

Worth trying to assist in getting the install where you want it....

That's what Chorus referred to it as, it is where the copper comes in next to the power box. The house is about 15m away from the end of the drive way so ideally we were wanting it to be wired in relation to where our dropbox is since that side is where we were hoping to have the ONT.

First image is of where the copper and power is, second image is where my neighbor's copper and power is in relation to ours at the end of our drive way.

Our other neighbor's fibre on the otherside (behind me in the second image) was installed from our dropbox so perhaps they did this to the whole street but it just doesn't make sense to me and is really crap since they want you to pay to change their weird installation placement.

Is there a reason they decided to install the street fibre where they would have to go through our wall, front yard and possibly the deck or driveway when the Chorus installer said they could get it into our house with the copper?

Can't really comment on your situation without seeing more plans and knowing locations but to answer your first question how each property is connected and where it is connected from is determined when the street design and build is done. Individual tubes will be allocated for each property during the build process.

Well, yes, they are certainly boxes and they do look like they have been dropped!!

Never seen those before. How common are they?

Where all possible we try to build the Fibre like for like with the existing copper network. However that’s based off our records of the network, individual properties may well have made modifications or changes that can put this out.

Other factors like council regulations or access can also inform that decision. Either way the dropoff locations are decided upon well before any work happens in the street and are chosen based on what we believe is the best option for the install.

In your case specifically it sounds like you and your neighbour share a copper pillar (pretty common) and so the dropoff for Fibre would have been put in the same vicinity. However as sbiddle says without seeing your specific details I couldn’t say for sure. If you want to flick through your address in a DM I would be happy to look into this in more detail with you. ^Richard

Not too sure how common that is but the house is like 26 years old

I just found it really weird for their choice of placement and didn't make the most sense for the install since they said they could go in with the copper.

For the fibre, supposedly the two houses are wired to the same point of the corner house and ours is wired to the neighbor's in the picture, and the neighbor on the other side out of the picture only just finished building recently and they were able to use the fibre wired to our dropbox.

So, if I understand correctly, your copper is at the grey chorus pedastal closest in the pictures, and as with 99% of the rest of the UFB rollout Chorus have placed the fibre drop for your property right there next to the copper pedastal so they can follow the exisiting copper path in using the existing conduit that the copper is in assuming it has not collaped.

However it seems you are not happy with that solution and want to enter from the otherside of the property as shown in the red circle on the picture, is this correct?

So next question, when the current copper hits your house, what access to ceiling or underfloor space is there.

So for the first image that is where our copper is accessed and goes under the ground to under our house from there.
Thinking that the fibre could go into or under the house from there, we wouldn't have to trench our driveway or go through our walls, front yard or deck etc.

The second image is showing where that dropbox in the first image is in relation to where the fibre for our house was actually installed on the street.
The red circle is the copper of our neighbor's house and where our street fibre is apparently installed, their's isn't even installed there.

We have a area under the house where you can crouch and move around.

Maybe take a google maps screenshot and mark on it the locations you are talking about, it's a little hard to tell from the pictures.

Hi, so as Chorusnz and others have stated and is a reasonable plan, by default the fibre is dropped to match your copper entry, assuming the conduit is still serviceable the fibre can be drawn up to the house via the existing conduit in the ground with no spade action required.

As to what happens once it gets to the house is another matter.

Edit: and to continue from Watterus's comment pictures of how the copper attaches to the house.

I'll have to double check how the copper comes in but I think it goes under the driveway.
Here is an image of where our copper drop off next to our driveway is located and where the fibre was installed on the street.

ummmm, so "Drop Off" I presume that for clarity that is "Preferred Drop off"
