Apparently we can finally order fibre for our current house although it may require consent from neighbours. We are also building a new house that should be finished February 2020. Is there any downside ordering fibre now for our current house and then moving the connection to a new build? It is probably more important to get fibre in the new house as soon as we move in.

We are currently on ADSL, 11Mbps. Not great but we manage most of the time

It can take months to get fiber connected.. sometimes days, sometimes weeks, but complex cases months. I'd skip it for the 5 months, unless you want it as a selling point for the current house.

If you do want it as a selling point maybe you want to do a lot of the prep yourself, so chorus contractors don't just come in and nail a cable to a fence or run it loose down the driveway. You read about that kind of thing quite often here.

Fiber is not like ADSL/VDSL, all the equipment stays with the property (ONT etc) so there is no such thing as to "move the connection"

and I dont think having fiber now will have any bearing on your new build's fiber install (I would make sure you get your wiring sorted though)

I would do it now, standard installation is free, then get a new one for your new place when it's built.

Not if Chorus does a sh*t job...

Originally they ran the wires along my neighbour's fence. It was atrocious.

Not sure if they still do that or not or if you can have a say in how to run the cables without incurring a fee.

When I asked Downer when they were going to open up the road, they said they didn't need to as there is a conduit apparently. I wonder where as it's an area with 70s houses

It is possible for the conduit to already be there.

Where we are (semi-rural west auckland) the conduit was installed in the 80's but somehow the maps got lost. Chorus sent out a surveyor for a few days then installed a microduct from the conduit to each dropoff.

Just keep an eye out for contract periods for free installs.

Some will charge an early disconnect fee, others don't..

Get it done at the old house so you see how it all goes, and can be more prepared with wiring etc. at the new place ahead of time.

Personally I would hold off getting it done.
At my old house I had semi wired up a storage cupboard as a comms area where a few Ethernet and RG6 connections went to.
While I didn't mind getting in there as it sometimes is a bit of a pain to get into I wasn't sure others would feel the same. So I held off and let the new owners decide what they wanted to do.

Unless there is a clear place where the ONT goes then let the new owner decide. Since otherwise it needs to be moved and that costs money rather than the free install.

I see that 2Degrees do open-term but charge $165 for modem and $99, I have a HG659b that should work, do I have to take their modem?
