When I do a speed test using the Speed test app., I have noticed a very high intial upload speed.

I am with Orcon Gigantic 900/450. (Chorus fibre). Test to Stuff Fibre Auckland.

Chorus ONT version 2, Router HG659, Windows 10.

Is it just the start of upload test buffering and the way the Speed test app works?

I don't see a high peak speed at the start of the download test.

Does it show the potential speed of the fibre?

Fibre could do I think in current form 1000/1000 @hio77 quote me if I am wrong

Fastest plan sold is 1000/500

Hi, it will be a buffering quirk in the the speedtest operates. There are only gigE interfaces on the ONT, so there is a plan and obvious limitation. GPON however supports approx 2.5Gb/s downstreamd and 1.2Gb/s up, but this is shared across all 16 or so users in the PON that you are in, but in theory that would be the max, but not behind your gigE interface.

I had a brain lapse on the speed limitations of the gigabit ethernet ports that would not let 2.2Gbps through.

So it reads like a speedtest buffering issue giving high peak upload results.

I guess I had in mind that the Speed test app may have obtained speed test data directly from the ONT optical interface and just fed the results through the ethernet port.

Hi, no the speedtest app is a cludge of packet testing tools not dissimilar to iperf, but clearly different, this is between the server and your test computer, everything in the middle is just part of a test they have no knowledge of.

Exactly this.

The buffering is normally far more noticeable in the mobile versions of speedtest though. wonder if they have adjusted their build...
