Hi everyone,

Does anyone in Auckland have a spare ONT power supply lying around?
Would only need it for a week. It’s the old ONT that uses 8 pin molex.
My father in law has moved into a new house, has no TV or internet over Christmas break. He’s on his own so feel a bit sorry for him.
Courier has the spare but they are closed obviously.

I think in this case OP has gone through the correct process but stuck with courier

With internet now an essential service you should have the option (at your expense) to truck roll a replacement

a plus 1 isnt enough for that post.

This is something that they should be able to put an order thru to the nearest tech to drop one off in a couple of hours max if they are in the area. Its super critical that people have internet.

Quite aware...

on the upside, this issue somewhat goes away with the newer gen3 onts. atleast it's a simple 12V DC Jack.

Although to be fair, the new one is also plastered with do not remote....

Chorus could do something with a supermarket - click and collect :-)

However i suspect the better process would be to ensure the ONT is powered up when they do the provisioning which if it isnt, then that triggers a call to the ISP or end customer asking them why. Its then up to the customer to advise chorus of the situation before they move in so chorus has enough time for a courier delivery.

Why was it something specific in the first instance?

Security/protection to stop incorrect supplies/or form factor design maybe?

Have the same concern on two properties within our collective, if they go down, there are parts at hand, just not those ONT parts

I believe it was part of an aborted plan to support battery-backup on the ONTs rather than having to use a 230V UPS with lots of standing losses. Good when you want 24hour+ backup times.

I can't find the pinouts, but I think they had the +/-12V in, a +/-12V for a deep cycle lead acid battery, an onboard charger, and maybe some alarm/on-battery contacts or something.

On that note, Chorus should make it possible to order both styles of power adaptor used for the Type 100 (and 200?) units and provide adaptors for users who don't wish to use their proprietary power supplies.

I have IEC cables from my UPS to the ONT power bricks. I can't simply drop in one of the wall warts they have been using on more recent Type 200 installs, I'd need to buy (or possibly assemble) new cabling to run through the rack to the ONT.

What if you plug in a third-party one and it makes the ONT explode or damages it? Then you'd have people who wouldn't want to pay for repairs.
