Hello,

I'm new to Wellington, NZ, and looking for a broadband connection I can get, preferably without having to get a phone line connected as well. I'm located on The Terrace and I'm pretty sure the building has Telstra cable wired.

Is there any options apart from Telstra cable and Woosh Wireless? I need around 15GB and was hoping to not have to signup for 12 months also and I may move when I get familar with the city.

Woosh has a good looking plan, 20GB for $60, but from what I've read it might not be fast enough to make getting that much data worth it?

Telstra cable has 20GB for $80, which is probably around the same amount as a phone line+ cheaper plan from another ISP?

Also what are the equipment costs for Woosh vs Telstra cable if anyone knows?

Are you able to get TelstraClear cable at your address?

If so, there isn't comparison in terms of speed, reliability between Woosh wireless and TelstraClear cable service. The price reflects it.

NZWireless also offer good coverage in the CBD.

As far as I'm aware Telstra require you to have a phone line if you want cable broadband...
They also have 12 month contracts, although the early disconnection fees aren't overly high.

This must be new, I ported my TelstraClear number to VFX last year and cancelled my cable TV since Freeview came on. I have only the cable modem service with TelstraClear...

From what I can see from the TCL website, you can get their more expensive broadband plans without having to have a phone line or any other services from them. A couple of their lower cost entry level plans do require you to also take a phone line.

Apart from a brief (~1 month) period a couple of years ago where a policy change occured and was then reversed there has never been a requirement to have a phoneline with a TCL cable connection in the 10+ they have offered cable modem connections. The only restriction is that the 2 low end plans are unavailable without a phoneline.

There is also no requirement for a term contacts on most TCL InHome plans or packages.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to go for the TelstraClear InHome 20GB plan. No fixed term and no phone line required.

tip:

I find my telstra 10GB plan is cheaper with 10 extra GB per month at 2.50 per GB.

10GB=around $50, plus $22.50=around $72

Its not as fast but meh. Still faster than all other isps

You've gone with TelstraClear but I'll say it anyway.. Orcon are installing equipment into the Wellington Central and Courtenay Place exchanges this month.
No term contract. Purple+ includes 15gb (additional gigs at $1/gb) with no phone line for $80.
Not sure what performance is like but yeah.
