There are two different things here: 1: Domain registration which is a yearly fee for owning the right to use a domain 2: Web hosting which is generally xyz $ per month
For registering a domain you can use any domain registry service you like, depends whether your want a .com or a .co.nz or a .geek.nz.
Regarding web hosting a standard "starter" plan is normally $5.95 per month. You may need to know what technology you want your site in.
