Looking into buying a new house in Rollerston. Is there anybody living in that area who can give me any feed back on ISP's, speed and reliablity etc. Thanks.

You will have problems in Rolleston with any ISP through telecom landlines. We recently moved to Richmond, Nelson and are now 'waiting for a port' to become available due to overloading in the area so are stuck back on dial-up. I phoned Telecom (despite our ISP being Vodafone) and after baffling a few people in the Philippines call centre got put through to a Kiwi who said that Richmond, Nelson had a problem with lack of port exchanges. However she also happened to mention that Rolleston was another problem area (assuming you are referring to the one with the prison near Christchurch) where you were unlikely to get Broadband unless you wait several months for a port to become available as there were no immediate plans to upgrade. The best thing to do is phone Telecom and ask to be put through to wholesale. If you baffle them about Rolleston and Port Waiting etc you will get a Kiwi who should be able to help. Ask them the situation. It doesn't matter who your ISP is if it is via the telecom network unless you find Wireless or Satellite internet.

Your best hope is to 'sign up' with an ISP, and wait, you wont be charged until your plan in activated. in the mean time just use dialup/cell phone/ wireless internet if available until you're given a port. Your ISP will have an idea of the average wait times for that exchange or if they have no other waiters on that exchange can find out for you. Will give you an idea of how long the average wait is.

I hate to be the barer of bad news, but Snap has a couple of people waiting for ports on the main Rolleston exchange. There are over 25 people waiting for broadband ports, the longest of which has been waiting 11 months.

I've heard rumors around the office about Snap helping the lack of broadband availability out there, but I will need to confirm if that is still happening before I promise anything.

Speedwise you can get any ADSL ISP.

The newer parts are full of the orginal (white) cabinets, But we don't get adsl2 untill some time in Oct 2011 - Jan 2012

You could call Netspeed, 0800 netspeed, they have wireless coverage there.

I can't explain why, but I can't comment on this further. I can really recommend the Netspeed option though, try and deal with Stan - hes very helpful.

Thanks Ralph. I will give Stan at Netspeed a call....but upto 2mbps ain't that great. Better than dial up I guess, maybe XT / Vodem data sticks

How about snap take advantage of LLU and install their gear in the Chch exchanges? surely that would make telecom act when they suddenly have competition?
