Hi Kiwi returning to Wellington after 3 years - a whole lot of stuff seems to have changed while I was away!

I am basically going to be on the move for a few months as we evict tenants/ sell houses etc so I am really not sure what to do for broadband. Broadband is totally essential to me as I run a business from home.

I don't wish to be tied up with a landline  phone line again which I lose everytime I leave the country or even suburb so I don't need a plan that includes a phone number - we already have a skype-in phone number.

Any recommendations for a phone which will pick up on the wireless single so I don't have to have the laptop on to answer the phone?

I need something that gives me the adsl2+ speeds I get in Perth 24MPS - but this seems to be very, very fast in NZ terms - like I see telestraclear advertising 2mps - that's hardly broadband speed is it? The speed I have here is OK - its not great but usable - so long as I don't want to watch videos online (which Idont very often) - I am just talking about normal surfing and website development stuff (not image heavy) - maybe I am missing something but 2mps seems very, very slow ?

So it seems that I need - in NZ terms a very, very fast speed - 24MPS but only a modest data limit 10GB/month is what I am currently using

Or is it more complex than the advertised speeds?

Can I bring my own modem back to NZ (dont laugh you used to have to have a telepermitted modem)! I have a 2 year old Dynalink DL604T which is an adsl2+  wireless modem/router which works just fine -  technically I assume it will just plug in in NZ so long as buy a NZ phone line connector.

Also any recommendations for  a mobile datastick type solution. I see telecom advertising one - hugely expensive though at $30 for only 500 MB (which I would use in 2 days without trying hard)

Sorry I am a little confused -  I was leaning heavily towards telestraclear - but their speeds seem way too slow - other options for Wellington?

TelstraClear speeds are either 4Mbps on the low end plans, 10 on the midrange and 25 on the top. I'm not sure where you saw the 2Mbps listed - this is however the upstream sopeed on all plans.

If you do go with TCL however it is a cable solution so your ADSL modem will be of no use, you just need a basic router without the ADSL modem.

OK it was probably 4mps - either way really slow. So ADSL is in general faster than cable - I thought it was the other way around

Hi, most of wellington has now been cabinetised, which in laymens terms means you should be able to get good ADSL2+ broadband in most area which will give you speeds between 10-20Mb/s although most should see 15+Mb/s. If your Dlink has been giving you good speeds on ADSL2+ in Aus then it should work as well here, although depending on what firmware it has will determine a lot, its a pretty old hat modem by todays standards, but if it was on a Telstra DSLAM in Aus then it should work just as well here as they use ISAM DSLAMs also.

Most ISPs (except Telecom) offer naked broadband options, but the saving in cost between taking a pots service and not is not as great as in Aus.

If you put your address into this link you will find out what type of ADSL service you may get.

Thats a really useful link thanks Cyril - to be honest its not so much saving money on the phone line - its just so inconvenient having to change it everytime I move - I've had the same email address for 5 years so I don't see why I can't have the same phone number :-)

If you sign up for a VoIP line here in NZ you'll be able to get a number you can keep no matter where you move. Your number can be ported in or out of virtually any provider in NZ.

sbiddle - the point is I travel a lot - I don't want a number that will work all over NZ - but one that will work all over the world - Skype seems the best option from comments from people who travel a lot - what's the advantage of having a NZ voip line?

A NZ VoIP number will work anywhere in the world just like your Skypein number.

Unlike that however it can be ported to any provider whereas Skype numbers are unable to be ported and being SIP based gives you a much greater selection of hardware and software that you can use.
