Hi Guys,

I've found a lot of information of good information on here. Now I find myself just going around in cricles and I don't trust Telecom to continue asking them questions.

I'm trying to establish whether I can receive ADSL2+ speeds or not. I've had 2 yes's and 2 no's from Telecom.

I've been told I connect to my exchange directly to receive ADSL2+( i seem to be in an areas of Lower Hutt which won't have it's cabinet upgraded (LHT/AB)). Telecom has said I live too far from the exchange to benefit from ADSL2+ speeds. So I rang 123 for a line check and was told I have 19db attenuation on my line, which theoritically can get 10Mb down and 1Mb up. AFter doing some reading it seems as though 19db would be within the 2km required to get ADSL2+ speeds.

After informing Telecom of this, they said I would not get ADSL2+ speeds as other people in my street get 5Mb down.

I'm a complete noob when it comes to this stuf, and it seems I'm getting contradictory info from Telecom, I'm very confused. My ISP is Slingshot, which I'll probably move from.

I'd really appreciate a explanation which makes sense. As expected Telecom just take the corporate line, but I just want to know what I'm missing here.

Your modem/router will negotiate at its highest level of protocol it can.

The exchange is ADSL2+ enabled, wether you get that or not is up to the connection handshake.

You may get ADSL2+, but only a connection rate of 8mbps out of a potential 24. It could fall back to ADSL1.1, and be the same speed but more stable.

You can only but try. However if you are only on 5-6 now, there may not be an advantage until you are cabinetised. I went from 4.5mb to 14 via cabinet.

The CSRs cannot gaurantee speeds. As it will often blow back. All they need to provide is a minimum.. which they adhere to most the time.

As for ADSL2+ speeds.. you can often connect at 14mb+.. doesn't mean you can DL that fast. Too source/other factor dependant.

Check your routers stats. If its ADSL2+ enabled, you may well be syncing at it now. Unless its a co-share exchange its the same hardware between ISPs with different profiles enabled.

Thanks for the suggestion, it is a good idea and I would do it but we need our neighbour's consent to dig up our shared drive way so we can get a connection with Telstra, our neighbour said "no".

So you should be able to connect using ADSL2+ even if the speed isn't anything special, as long as your modem supports ADSL2+. Its pointless trying to guess what speed you are likely to get because thats affected by too many factors. However, assuming the phone lines in your street are good enough for megs, ADSL2+ still has the advantage over ADSL that your modem can adjust sync rates without dropping its connection if it needs to get a slower/more reliable speed. If people in your area only get 5megs with 19dB ADSL lines, there may be some interferance and crosstalk causing those speeds.

I heard of crosstalk being really bad in some areas with many small side-streets, due to "multiples" and lots of joins. You can try to improve your house wiring by puttingin a master splitter, but there won't be much change on whats in the street.

Time to find a new industry!

Hi, if your attenuation is 19dB then you should get easily 14Mb/s if not more. Have you checked what you current modem stats are, as others have said you may infact be getting ADSL2+ speeds already, to post your current modem stats would be most helpful in helping you.

Also LHT/AB is not a new cabinet, so is it infact an older cabinet with older ASAM or Conklin gear in it, if so you may be stuck with ADSL1, do you have a more specific address, just a street neme to preserve your privacy

When I rang Telecom for a line check they said my attenuation was 19db, however, from my previous modem (died last week) I had these stats: (However, we did have anunfiltered phone on our line when these stats were taken):

On a side note, my up line rate has been incorrecly throttled to 164, which Telecom will hopefully fix in 2 days.

My new modem does not have the capability to get attenuation (Linksys WAG120N) which seems to be a known limitation of this model. So unless I get another line check to confirm 19db, I'm guessing until then.

My street is Maire Street, Woburn, Telecom said that my Cabinet LHT/AB will be upgraded in/by 2011, which I have found no evidence of, as I looked on http://www.chorus.co.nz/f462,14861/Webmigration.xls (Chorus' schedule for cabinet upgrades) and there is no mention of LHT/AB being upgraded. Perhaps I just live in an area of Lower Hutt which will remain on ADSL1?

For an ordinary person it's really difficult to decipher what's going on. Any help insights would be greatly appreciated.

My Router WAG120N doesn't show them either unless you go to that address, So it may work on yours.

Hi, are you north or south of massey ave, your modem should tell you the sync rate if not the attenuation.

Thanks, I'd seen that elsewhere and was hopeful, but if i go there I get blank values each time, seems quite weird really.

Hi Cyril,

We're just north, unfortunately, it seems Massey Ave is within range of an upgraded cabinet, but Maire's LHT/AB is not upgraded. Is this right?

By sync rate, do you mean downstream and upstream rates?
If so, here they are

Status:Up

Downstream Rate:5493 kbps
Upstream Rate:164 kbps

I'm guessing that the downstream is adsl1, the up rate should improve soon.

Hi, the details that are blank would be good, but it seems to me that you are infact already connected to an ADSL2+ port with no cabinet to be deployed. Without an attenuation figure I cannot determine what type of speeds you should get.

I presume you have done all the usual isolation tests. I would expect that you should get somewhere closer to 8-10Mb/s.

I presume you have done all the usual isolation tests. I would expect that you should get somewhere closer to 8-10Mb/s.

Hi,

Yes that makes sense, but unless I get a new modem I'm unsure how to get the actual figures. Telecom said my line was 19db and Telecom users on my street get 5 Mb/s. But it all seems theortical rather than actual.

As your upload speed is currently capped this will also affect your download speed (In theory if your upload speed is capped at 128kbps you should only be able to recieve 4mbps down without getting too techy) so it will be interesting to see what sort of speeds you recieve once this cap is lifted as this will likely greatly improve your DL speeds as well.

The annoying thing is I'm on a fullspeed up and down plan. Yet Slingshot stuffed up and told Telecom I was on a capped up plan.

Hi,

Changes have gone through and everything seems much better ping has reduced by half, up is doubled and down is *7. So I'm happy.

This is to the Auckland server, but ping and upload times to Sydney and LA are much better. Down seems around 1Mb/s better to overseas servers.
