Apparently I am on adsl 2+ but I am not sure if that speeds that I get represent what I should be getting.

Speed test:

Modem stats:

Line Mode: ADSL2+

Line Attenuation: Down 40.0db  up 20.9
Line Rate: Down 6764 Kpbs Up 1016 Kbps

I live very close to 3 schools and the speed tests at the schools reach around 22 Mb/s .

I think it maybe that my modem is whats limiting but the only reason I think this is because when I transfer files over lan from computer to computer the max speed it goes is 700kb/s which I think might be the modems maximum capability.

If you want to check my cabinet/exchange you can check at http://www.telecomwholesale.co.nz/maps  (I live at westwood st).

Advice to increase my speeds would be helpful.

Cheers

Hi, as you are toward the edge of a cabineted area but not in a cabineted area then one would imagine that you are capable of achieving at least 10Mb/s at least.

40dB is getting up there, and the speeds you have are good for that attenuation, but the question that needs to be asked is, how real is that attenuation, is it artificially inflated by poor house wiring, have you done an isolation test, ie removed all other phones/faxs/sky boxs everything from across the line and tested the speed then, do you have an alarm that can dial out to the security service.

Yeah that downstream attenuation is quite high. I'd so as Cyril says and remove any of what he listed, also move your modem to the master jack if you know where that is.

Not quite sure why you'd give your address out on a forum btw..

I have tried to find out what jack is the master jack before the they all looked the same.  Some hints of what to look for may be helpful. I will try remove all other phones then test again. Also I don't see what anyone is going to do with my address but I would remove it if my post was still editable.

Master jack if its an old 3wire system will have a M on the lower left corner, if there is no outside ETP ( small white box under eave or whereever) then there may be black sheathed outdoor cable from the network and white or grey sheathed light duty cable going onward to the house. typically a jack closest to where the cable touches down on the house, but not always.

Thanks for that I will now go have a look.  I removed all phones from their jacks and restarted the modem and the down attenuation has actually increased from 40 to 40.5. Is a possible reason for high attenuation because the house has 6 different phone jacks?

One thing I thought of is should each jack have a filter even if the jack isn't being used by a phone? I have found the master jack, it had the small m in the bottom right which means I must be on the old 3 wire system, but it is a bad place to be moving the modem to as the computers are based to far away from it.

How much of a difference would using the master jack make and also how much of a difference would the
wire system make?

6 jacks in the old master/slave configuration is probably the root cause of your problem.

Your best option is the installation of a master splitter.

How would I go about  installing a master splitter? I decided I would plug my modem into the supposed master jack as a test so I found the extension cable and set it up, and the attainable line rate actually dropped from  Down 6764 to 5623 Kbps which really confuses me.

Also the jack that the modem is plugged into has an E in the bottom right corner, and the rest of the 4 jacks have a 2. So I am not sure of the significance of the E but it may mean something.

There's probably detailed guides around the forum but basically, find the Telecom demarcation point, from the feed on the house side connect 2 pairs, one will be for your ADSL and should be a twisted pair if you are going any distance (a network cat 5 type cable will do), you connect the central splitter to the other pair which then goes on to your existing phone lines.

Sometimes the phone lines are split or routed inside the Telecom box so you have to go inside it to do the above. Colour codes are all standard . If you are not confident with this type of thing I suggest you call in a Pro. It will be worth it to get good stable Internet and home phone system.

If you want to arrange it yourself.. probably about $40-60 for materials and whatever hourly rate by however long it takes for a electrician/data cable person to do the work.

Otherwise you can just go through your ISP or Telecom and they will charge ~$199.

Might be a GZ forum member around your area who will give you a hand for beer/pizza, then you just need to buy materials and beer!

Sounds like a plan to get a GZ member round. If not I will email slingshot and get a quote from them.

If you're not in too much of a hurry, I can do this for you next time I make a trip over the big hill - which should be sometime in next couple of weeks, and certainly a bit cheaper than the $200 for a Chorus tech.
Flick me a PM if you are interested.
