Hi.

I've just moved into an apartment in Newmarket (after just having moved from Australia a few weeks ago) and I'm having a bit of trouble getting ADSL hooked up. The form that my apartment's address takes is:

  Apartment <Letter><Level><Number>
  176 Broadway
  Newmarket

where <Letter> is A, B, C or D (building number, basically), <Level> is a number from 3-7 and <Number> is a two digit number for the apartment on that floor -- C512 for example.  I have a phone jack in the apartment, but not handset, so I don't know if it has an active connection or not (but I would assume not).

I called up xnet to get naked ADSL connection and gave them my address, but they said they couldn't find it on Telecom's database.  They told me to ring Telecom to find out what the "cable address" is for the apartment.  When I rang Telecom they said they could not tell me, since that's something to do with Telecom Wholesale and that I as a customer could not talk to them, and that the ISP should have been well aware of this.  While I was on the phone, I changed my mailing address for my Telecom mobile service.  When I did so, the address they changed it to is

  Unit <Level><Number>
  Floor <Level>
  176<Letter> Broadway
  Newmarket

So I tried ringing xnet back with this address, but still no luck.  Strangely they find adjacent apartments in their database with addresses of the form <Letter><Level><Number>, so I don't know why mine wouldn't come up.  Anyway, he did find something similar:

  Unit <Level><Level><Number>
  176<Letter> Broadway
  Newmarket

So that might be the right address, but I'm not sure! :)  He then said that if that is the right address, I can't get naked ADSL connected there -- his system said the test came back "inconclusive".

So two questions:

1. How should I go about verifying that this address is actually my address? :)

2. What does the "inconclusive" mean for the naked ADSL check, exactly?  What requirements are there to get naked ADSL?

Thanks!

Cameron

If the address doesn't exist in here:

http://www.telecomwholesale.co.nz/maps

Then it most likely isn't in Telecoms address database, ie its never had service before. Xnet should be able to order DSL for your address, it just takes longer as it can take 2-3 weeks to get your address added to the database

Have you asked the building super? Or the tenancy agency who rented you the apartment? They may have more information on how to get ADSL connected in the apartments.

@wjw: It's weird, on the Google Maps there, you can see 176 Broadway, although it doesn't come up if I type it in. But number 186 on the map, the big block, looks like where the actual apartment building is. (The 176 is positioned where the main entrance from Broadway is.) All of the information I have seen so far, though, is that my address is 176.

@kingjj: Yeah I just sent an email off to the agent this morning. I guess I should go and find the building manager and ask them too!

It could have been flats before and have different numbering such as unit 1, flat 1, 1/186 something like that

I really need to be able to ring up Telecom, give them a lat/long/altitude, and ask them how they name that place. :-)

http://www.telecomwholesale.co.nz/maps shows that building with slightly different address, so maybe try that?

"176-178 Broadway, Newmarket-Parnell, Auckland City"

But the addresses on the map service seem to be a different database to provisioning.

Time to find a new industry!

@webwat Oh, cool.  Still, if I use for example Orcon's address locator I still only find some other apartment numbers here and not mine.

Anyway, I decided to ring up Orcon today and give them a try, and they were much more helpful than the three different xnet people I talked to.  She also couldn't find the address, but she put the provisioning request through for the neighbouring apartment that was listed, and put a note on there to actually do it for my apartment.  Maybe I'll need some extra charge for hooking something up at the exchange (and/or wiring in the apartment), but at least it looks like things have been set in motion!
