I live in Pukekohe East about 5 km's (aparently) from the Buckland exchange. I have an older D-Link all in one and am getting synching speeds of around 1.3 MBit down and 0.4 Mbit up. I've been told by Telecom that getting ADSL2+ would not help with a speed increase. What do you guys reckon? How do I get faster speeds? New modem? What would be the best?

Something with a broadcom chipset is nice. Netcomm's NB6Plus range or Dynalink. They tend to work well on longer/lower quality lines.

Yep Broadcom is the go, TP Link is also a good Broadcom modem.

At 5km I would not expect any more speed than what you are getting, and with variable results over time/day

Yeah don't think you will see much improvement at that distance.

I would be tempted to spend the $$ on a adsl master splitter to cleanly isolate the adsl line from the rest of your phone wiring first before a new modem/router (unless you already have one).

Upgrading the modem/router may still be worthwhile if you want gigabit lan and wireless N.

Thanks guys I will do both, try out the TP Link modem and splitter. Let you know how it goes.
