I have a THOMSON ST5x6v6 or Speedtouch
i was looking in the event log and i came past this its showing (line Attenuation Down: 31.5 dB, Up: 20.0 dB)

Do you think im on a bad line. i mean it does lag sometimes. this is my speed test

Im not really sure how to look at the line attenuation on my modem i just found this in the event log.
oh by the way im with orcon.

I wouldn't describe it as bad but it could potentially be better if you were within ~500m of an exchange or cabinet.

You've got a pretty good connection then. Attenuation is a little high which suggests you're using plug in splitters rather than a master filter so you could get another couple of Mbps with one.

i was thinking of getting a master filter but im no good at install stuff on to the line.
There are 3 telephone ports or whatever you call them and i am on the 2nd port. they are connected to 1 main port (Linked) and ya im using the plug in splitters that came with the modem.

Call a local telephone installer company to do it - usually cheaper than getting chorus out to do an install.

If you want to find your statistics about your Attenuation and SN Margin.

Go to Home > Broadband Connection > DSL Connection Then click on Details up the top on the right hand side, that's if you are using Thomson Gateway modem.

I wouldn't worry that much about the changes in your Margins to much unless they change quite a bit.. i guess by 10 - 20+

Getting a Master splitter might help you get those last few megs... if you really want them and prepared to pay for it. chorus charge what $180 + gst ?? prices have changed since i last put one in.

When talking about broadband, the exchange or cabinet are the same thing. Since you are 2km from the exchange, then the performance you get based on loop length will be as good as being 2km from a cabinet.  Exchange is just a big cabinet.
Both the exchange or a cabinet contain the DSLAM which transmits your broadband signal down the line.

There is no point cabnetising people that are within 2km of the exchange.

Just want you to understand that moving house to be on a cabinet isnt what you want. You instead should move house to be closer to a dslam - which can be housed inside a cabinet or an exchange.

don't think you should worry about your line Attenuation, i mean 30Db is pretty good unless you are really close to exchange/cabinet
