Lets face it, there is a huge growing demand in NZ for music, movies and tv shows either streamed or downloaded from the internet.

Yet I can think of very few companies providing this service to us.

Many are region locked:

Netflix
Hulu
all major American cable companies (NBC, Fox, Comedy Central etc.)

Local ones either inadequate and/or far behind screenings in the US:
TVNZ on demand
iSky

Is iTunes the only option? Its good for music, being DRM free and a decent bitrate. Movies are ok but are not DRM free. We have zero access to TV shows through it.

Any other options?

The BBC iPlayer looks promising, when will it be available outside the UK? Will prove incredibly popular and force other networks into action to follow suit?

and a related question: will our data requirements ever match our thirst for media?
While I was in the US I watched every episode of Stargate Atlantis in HD through Netflix, I can't imagine how much data that chewed through!

Zune marketplace for movies in NZ. Could use a US VPN to download music and tv shows via the Zune marketplace.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Using a US VPN to watch stuff that isn't available in NZ is probably still "wrong". It's certainly a grey area legally, if not outright illegal.

(For the record, I don't give a damn. I download TV shows all the time, most recently Stargate Universe and MLP, because they aren't available here when they come out)

Thanks Bill ;)
I tried watching a few trailers in the Zune Marketplace on my xbox 360 but the UI was so godawful I gave it up.

Using a US VPN would surely be breaching a copyright law somewhere. I'm talking completely legal options, no geek trickery haha

You may be breaking the terms of services of the service you are using (for example using an iTunes US account in New Zealand, which doesn't need VPN at all), but it is not illegal and you are paying for the content. No more illegal than buying a DVD in the U.S. and bringing it back here.

What may be illegal is the ownership of a movie that wasn't rated by the NZ censor though.

I use digiRAMA http://www.digirama.co.nz for music, have done for years.

Their support team is awesome when you need them too.

Agreed digiRAMA is pretty awesome, I've also gotten a few albums from http://www.bandcamp.com and http://www.digstation.com though I mostly use iTunes for the convenience.

I don't think any online music stores are region locked (maybe Amazon?... not sure) Its good to see the music industry embracing the use of technology. I've discovered bands I would never have known existed otherwise

Bit of info on BBC iPlayer going global:

Pricing: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/news/8357347/BBC-global-iPlayer-subscription-will-be-cheaper-t...

Content: http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/technology/iandouglas/100006545/androids-get-iplayer-overseas-version-t.../

Until then, expat shield works fine, don't know if it's legal to use it for that though.

iPlayer would be good to have, I guess you would only need to have to pay a yearly fee for a BBC TV license.

Music, maybe google could make it better by buying the music industry.

I use Bandit.fm now and again for music.  Music is high quality and DRM free.

Has anyone used the Zune streaming service?

It says you need a minimum 4Mbit/s broadband connection so *theoretically* many of us should be able to give it a go. Though, 4Mbit/s for 1080p? Are you kidding me?

My problem with these services is the software.

Sure I could use iTunes, if I installed the (horrible, bloated) iTunes software.

Sure I could use Zune Marketplace, if I installed their (admittedly untested by me, but come on, it is Microsoft) software.

I want content providers to provide a service available to any of their customers. Offering a non-DRM file download or non-proprietary streaming service would be perfect.

What are all the Linux users supposed to do when someone tells them "Just use iTunes, you pirate".

My issue is that I am not being sold a service with the current video download/streaming services. I am being sold a crappy, invasive piece of software which runs on two operating systems; that can also provide the service you want.

I would be interested to know if anyone ever used the Zune Marketplace, considering Zunes were never sold here (correct me if I'm wrong).

Most people use iTunes because either they use OS X or have an iPod/iPhone/iPad that requires iTunes to do anything. No way around that.
Having the store built into the software makes it easier for people to get their content, I for one would hate to have to go through a web page every time I buy a song for my iPhone.
If Zunes had been more popular everyone would be using Zune Marketplace or WMP or whatever it requires.

Still I can see your point, if you don't actually have one of MS or Apple's devices it is a hassle to use the software just access to the store. There need to be alternatives.

I'm no Linux maestro but can't you install iTunes using Wine?

Zune Marketplace (movies only) is available for New Zealand, regardless of Zune being sold here. It can be used on PCs, Xbox and Windows Phone.

Not trying to belittle Zune Marketplace, just making the connection that because not many people in NZ have Zunes, not many would use the Zune Marketplace. Maybe Windows Phone will cause a resurgence in its use? Or a rebranding to Windows Phone marketplace

Zune Marketplace was available before Windows Phone through Xbox. Since it spans more than one product it might as well remain as "Zune Marketplace".

WINE is iffy running iTunes. Now if Spotify were to be release here... There would be a model I could agree with :D
