The performance of New Zealand’s broadband services is continuing to improve according to a report released by the Commerce Commission today.
The report is part of a continuing series measuring broadband performance in New Zealand. Covering the period from July – December 2010, the report provides a summary of the performance of internet service providers (ISPs) in delivering broadband services in New Zealand’s major cities.

"The report shows that increased competition from unbundled copper local loop services has improved broadband performance,” said Telecommunications Commissioner Dr Ross Patterson.

Key findings of the report include:

• Minimum, average and maximum web browsing speeds achievable on Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) have all increased, with maximum speed increasing from 5.5Mbps to 6.5Mbps.
• TelstraClear’s cable service provided the best browsing performance (in the areas where it is available), but was closely followed by service providers using unbundled copper local loop lines.
• Average web browsing speed diminishes with increasing distance from infrastructure in Auckland.
• Use of local storage (caching) for international content continues to provide a significant international browsing performance boost. Average international web browsing speed to the Commission’s test site falls from around 2Mbps to 0.5Mbps when the test site content is not locally cached.
• There was a marked reduction in network availability over the six month period, with all tested ISPs falling below the Commission’s benchmark at times.

Good to see things slowly improving but it was disappointing to see TelstraClear shelves their 100Mbps plans as mentioned in Stuff Article on Monday.  Yes for the general user that download speed isn't really needed, but when you have done a massive advertising campaign saying "Feet up Mr Joyce" then go back on what you were doing, it's rather hypocritical.

There are other things that are definitely a problem at this time.  Upload speeds.  These vary widely depending who you are with but need to be faster.  With the use of Online Backup, initial seeds take a while, but depending on the amount of content you produce, this is a  necessity.  Along with service such as Skype.

The last but I see biggest problem currently is Data Caps.  We get minimal data caps in NZ compared to other countries including Australia.  As can be seen from the last two paragraphs in the article on TC they say that due to less competitive pressure here on data so they don't need to offer as much.  In Australia their plans go into the hundreds of GB even a TB and unlimited for the same price as some of our higher priced plans here.

We are using more data than ever and this is not going to change.  Have a family, do some surfing, Youtube, Skype, download Music, Movies, streaming content.  Online Backup.  You very quickly chew through your caps.

so broadband sold only to urban areas (TCL cable and UCLL) is on average faster than broadband which is a mix of urban and non-urban (Telecom wholesale)

what a surprise.

Telecom wholesale use a conservative 12dB noise margin where as most of the LLU providers use 6dB.

Each 3dB exta of SNR is worth anywhere between 400 to 1200kbps of line rate.

Would love to see TrueNet results for a comparison to the ComCom Epitrio report, I believe the sample size of the ComCom report is not very large.

The entire report is unfortunately up against so many problems that skew it's results. Lots of questions need to be asked to those who are behind them:

As we know internal house wiring is the single biggest factor influencing ADSL speeds. Not a week goes by where I don't hear or read of a number of people who suddenly discover 5Mbps - 10Mbps increases in speed when they fix their wiring or install a master splitter. I'd make a pretty bold prediction and say that 75% of homes that use ADSL have real life speeds below what they should be obtaining. Due to the relatively small number of connections for some ISP's their stats can be seriously skewed if they're testing customers who have poor sync speeds.

IMHO no end user should be allowed to partake in the testing unless they have had a professionally installed master splitter. This has the downside of delivering results which may not be "real world" but is the only way to ensure there is a level playing field.

What sort of connectivity is the ISP using? Is it UBA/UBS or EUBA? There is a massive difference in performance once the handover bottlenecks are removed and those ISP's offering EUBA are typically offering a vastly superior product.
