Hey guys,
Just saw this:

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=10753031

If its true then we probably will see the cable up and running by next year (as long as the consent process for landing isn't held up by a taniwha). The Chinese know how to roll out infrastructure very quickly!

I wonder if the cable's going to be a protected ring, If it is then it's very dangerous towards PF. I think there will be some bad words flying around the upper levels of Vodafone right now....

Fingers cross the government doesn't muck this up. If the Chinese want to build us a shiny new cable then let them do it. Here hoping Pacific Fibre keep theirs and we have 3 cables coming into NZ.

I doubt pac fibre would continue to build if huawei laid a cable.

I also would think any contracts pac fibre have with ISP's, are conditional that they only come into effect if they auctually build the cable.

Erm, they're building between Australia and New Zealand. How does that affect Pacific Fibre who are building between both Australia and New Zealand and the United States?

As I see it, Pacific Fibre would still provide a lower latency between the South Pacific and the Americas than any other cable provider and Australian companies having cheaper transit between Australia and New Zealand does not help them unless they retain juicy deals with Pacific Fibre for further international transit.

AU opens up more cables for international access, Whilst PF is less latency it's hardly worth noting despite PF's attempts to play on it, their own estimates put latency 7ms lower than SXC and you have to trade redundancy to get it. Getting into AU opens up a cheap path to things like Googles DC in SYD and more direct paths into Asia as well as more paths into the USA.

PF was up against SXC in NZ which is easier from a business perspective than going up against SCX,PPC-1 and a few others I cant remember right now. It's a big game changer that is going to force PF to rethink things when it's built which seems likely since they have already secured funding (AXIN seems to be throwing money into NZ fibre at the moment, They are backing a new regional fiber build aswell)

Yes this fantastic news, so now we need to be solely focused on how to get the 1's and 0's off the end of the fibre into homes where people can use it.

There is room in the market for 4 trans Tasman cable providers so I really wouldn't worry to much about PF.

HW/CN are investing because of migration to .nz and because they see .nz as a great place to prove technology and show case it to .world (at least that's my view of what they're up to).

The guy who built PPC1 from syd.au to Guam commented some time back that there would be a traffic shift to .asia and I'm sure that's a fact that PF, VF, iiNet and others have not over looked in their planning and are not even a little concerned about what HW/CN are doing.

Our role now has to get focused on getting those 1's and 0's in to homes in a cost effective meaningful way.

Kordia and FX are focused on moving it up and down the country. Vector, CityLink, Enabled and and a few others are very focused on moving it around the country and dropping it off in our local towns.

Ray and many of his friends are clearly focused on getting the data off the fibre and into your computer.

I don't think this will cause any great trouble to Pacific Fibre, since they were still planning to go ahead before Kordia shelved its own plans. They might decide to put their own cores in the Huawei cable instead of their own build, or cross sell Huawei bandwidth for redundancy. If both cables go ahead, I imagine Southern Cross would be more worried because customers would have redundancy choices without needing SCX at all.

Time to find a new industry!

Some carrier grade internet. Couple of megabits dedicated international. Ended up getting a dedicated megabit through another WISP because the guy wouldnt call back, but i will need to get onto FX at some stage as I grow.

Just got my block of v4 addresses and an ASN number from apnic - gotta figure out how to use it all next week lol

lol... now that is just funny.  Everyone fails, so the only way to get uptime is more that one path and BGP that works from what I can see, and even then... "Build it... and it will break".

Yip.  FX will come knocking soon enough once you've got enough tails.  Kordia will put a look in as well.  Best way to get capacity is just put a shout out on NZNog that you need it.

I was getting hammered by my stakeholders that we should be talking to FX because they've got the rail fibre.  Bounced in, bounced out...

Very cool!  So now you're in for learning about BGP.  Geoff Huston is the guru... but it really does look like a black art and not even big providers like CityLink get it right.

As for Huawei, I get the impression that Murry has told them that if they want to sell more kit here then they need to get capacity in to the country and waiting for PF to get it sorted is a risk to them.
