Hi,

Well I recently wanted to change from Orcon ($125 per month for 105GB) to Telecom Total Home Broadband. ($115 for phone and 60GB data)

I ring Telecom and ask them to tell me when they can make the change and they tell me the following...
1) There are 13 people waiting for connection on my exchange.
2) Since I would be changing providers I will go to the back of the queue to get connected if I did change.
3) It could be a month or two before a space opens up... or never...

So, I think that I could change my plan at Orcon until my exchange gets upgraded and there is space.

I ring Orcon....

I ask where have all there broadband only plans gone, I dont want to use Genius, I dont want a home line with orcon, I just want to change the data plan of my existing connection...

I get told.... you cant! Either move to orcon home line or Genius...

Any suggestions on what I should do??

Thanks....

Go without internet or keeping paying! Orcon.... you used to be very good with helping your customers... doesnt seem like this is the case now... unless we have our phone with you....

Have you looked to see when your exchange is being upgraded or cabinet is being installed?

It looks like my exchange is due in December.... does that mean that they will be making more room at the exchange though?
I have a cabinet about 300m away but my phone is not routed there!

Without knowing any more about your details or location I'd pick your issues probably being resolved in December when things are upgraded.

If you move from one wholesale provider to another, this shouldn't happen, so I suspect the issue is that you are currently on an unbundled orcon service and wishing to move to a telecom wholesale service, but the telecom dslam has no ports. This means that any other wholesale ISP would also not be able to serve you either.

you could try a different unbundled provider maybe - such as vodafone or telstraclear. see what they say?

or you could just use the genius but not plug a phone in.....  (or when you say 'broadband only' do you man you want to keep your landline with somebody else - that is not possible on an unbundled service AFAIK)

I found this out the other evening, too.

I'm also on 100GB+ and was thinking I might reduce my data quota a bit. But I can't do that without taking my phone to Orcon.

Hmm. Orcon clearly want to be a telco.

I don't mind. I'm just working out whether that aligns with what I want.

Haven't decided.

If you have a ULL connection with Orcon your phone service has to be with them unless you want to have a 2nd line into your house - a ULL connection with Telecom POTS isn't a supported scenario. The irony of this is that several ISP's offering ULL services made a big deal about the SLES offering so they could offer wholesale DSL from the cabinet and their own POTS voice solution from the exchange.

Wait what? really? i know SLES is something they can purchase, but, are ISP's actually bothering to do that just to use their own equipment for voice?

I highly doubt any exchange that orcon has equipment in is in a situation where tcom wholesale would not expand their DSL services promptly.

I am in New Plymouth, so I dont think Orcon has any gear here...

Well I guess I will have to wait till December and Ring Telecom Weekly for an update on my exchange and its queues!

I forget exactly what the SLES is but when you can get multiport voip gateways, you can send voice services to an exchange over a cheap data connection, and serve a line with voicemail, caller id and a bunch of other features at maybe a cost of $10 per line rather than what telecom charges for the line via the PSTN, with caller ID and voicemail services priced on top.

I have seen 48 port DSLAMS that have a 48 port FXS gateway built in also, so you can provide triple play to 48 lines via the single box.

Well several ISP's complained, which resulted in a Commerce Commission investigation, and a decision to issues proceedings against Telecom.

There is no unbundled service in my area. It's Telecom wholesale only. I'm in what is probably the only area on the North Shore without unbundled service.
