Hi All,

I have just moved here from Canada and am trying to figure out which ISP for broadband I should subscribe to. I am used to unlimited downloads and uploads and speeds up to 6mbs all for $50/month!!!. I realise that I probably cant get that here and so I am wondering which ISP's people you guys recommend and which plans.

I do quite a bit of downloading and online gaming if that helps.

Xtra is New Zealand’s largest ISP, and currently offers a free modem and connection to broadband on a no contact basis.

From October 26 new broadband plans will be launching, so watch this space, but by all means sign up for broadband now as your ISP will transfer you to one of the new plans when they launch.

I'd say, depending on where you are. If you are going to be in Wellington, Kapiti Coast or Christchurch then TCL Cable wins hands down.

If else where, perhaps Orcon or Ihug for ADSL. Check this site [10Layers.com] out, it is worth a read and some other "insights" too about Full Speed ADSL that maybe launching soon.

I used to be on ADSL, with Paradise.net (which is a subsidiary of TelstraClear now, which now offers UBS speed package called PDQ) BUT since I am one of a few that is lucky to be in TCL cable-serviced area, so I got myself Triple Service which has phone, internet cable, and digital cable tv for a good packaged priced of NZ$131.90 (20GB 4Mbps/2Mbps, which is more than sufficient for my monthly usage, hardly use over 5GB).

Internet is my backyard...

hey....thanks for choosing a country that is 100 years behind africa in technology.....forget about unlimited downloads unless you want to sign up 256kbit for $99 from orcon which previously used to be $49.....

the highest speed you can get is 3.5mbps here and that if you are 20% of lucky nzers to get that speed....most only get 2mbps

best IPS = ihug (www.ihug.co.nz) which gives the most bandwith than any other ISP or slingshot the 2nd best....

from 26th october we will all get 7.5mbps/768kbps upload speed with DATA CAPS and all connections will be deinterleaved (YES we are all interleaved btw so your pings atm will be shocking)....

enjoy your stay.....(btw NZ just unbundled the broadband internet service (from 2007))

First, interleaving will not be turned off by default, the ISPs have to request it. And there will be plans without caps....

PTC, the most important thing: where are going to establish yourself and family? Because this can be part of the decision process. You probably know by now that cable modem service is only available in some places, as pointed by chiefie. And it rocks. I have a 10Mbps/2Mbps (down/up) connection with 80GB traffic/month. Not unlimited, but pretty good.

You will find out when the plans are released. It could be then or 28/10 when speeds go up...

Interesting plans.... had a read of the GP forum too.

Wholesale prices.. wonder how that will pan out retail?

It is a bit suss to be honest, especially the plan names.... but it could be true.

The most interesting plan is the "unlimited" but "managed" Cabriolet. The article says:

... aimed at extremely high volume users, who will be put into a pool of IP addresses, with a manage amount of bandwidth shared among all the users in that group.

You know what? It means that yes, it's full rate from your modem to the Exchange and from there to the world is going to be in the slow lane, with all those heavy downloaders. This and the fact that it's only 128Kbps upload.

Full Speed? Yeah, right...

We have had these plans posted on 10layers.com since last week

The cabriolet etc names are the Telecom wholesale equivalent names. XTRA will use other names.

Interesting though that the low end plan ($29.95) will be sold below cost.
