Hi there,

I'm trying to send an email to someone @uni-duisburg-essen.de, and part of their name includes the character 'ü'. Including that as part of the email address, I getServer error: 'Invalid recipient'

via Outlook.

In Gmail, I get the message saying the address in the To: field was not recognised.

Sending the email, replacing ü with u, results in an email back from their email server saying no such user exists.

So how do I send this person an email?

That might just be their reply-to address that they set up. Do you have an email from them that you can check the headers and see what the actual email address is?

Unfortunately no. It is however the email address that appears when clicking on the image to email them, from their university webpage.

Can you right click the part of the webpage that contains the link, View Source find the mailto: link and copy the email address? Paste it directly into Outlook to make sure that it is the same, if not maybe the email address you are trying to send is invalid and either changed or been removed.

I think the key point from that Wiki is this:

These addresses are not compliant with RFC 5322 and will therefore not work with many of the current generation of email servers and clients. RFC 6530 compliant servers should be able to handle these.

Latin Alphabet (with diacritics): Pel?@example.com

u umlaut (with double dots) has a diacritic as per the above example. It seems that something in the mail system at your end is not able to handle RFC6530, but only RFC 5322.

EDIT: It looks like Geekzone's editor doesn't handle diacritics either because the e acute (with the ' above it) has been translated into a ? mark.
