After reading the review on the Synology DS212j I am now keen on one. The best price I have seen is from Amazon ($270 including postage), in NZ I am looking around $360 from Asent and PB Tech.
Interestingly, Amazon's postage is only $30 where NZ Post's new forwarding service is $50 but Amazon does postage on this item - yay. - And Yes Freitasm, I will use the Geekzone amazon link so you get your referral.

Anyway. my question is, if I get it from Amazon will I be able to plug i straight into the power socket in the wall, or will I have to get an adapter. And if I need to get an adaptor, will a simple one be ok (like a travel adaptor? or will I have to get an electrician to put a plug on the end for NZ. Not wanting to burn down my house, I would rather pay an electrician to do this, however this is eating into my savings which if I get close to NZ prices, I would buy from NZ store.

And before you ask, I am very patriotic and support NZ business where I can, except if I have to pay too a high premium for it and I don't mind buying from overseas if I follow my wallet, not my heart.

Thanks in advance.

Voltage wise it would probably be fine, as most modern electronics support 110 - 250 Volt power out of the box.

Based on the quick installation guide, it looks a standard IEC power lead ("Jug cord") goes from the wall to the power supply, so you can just swap it out for a power lead that you have lying around, commonly used with desktops, monitors, larger printers etc

The ones I quickly looked at said "Ships from and sold by Amazon.com" which would indicate American to me - so 110v. As they're shipping these items overseas it's a bit of an oversight (arrogance?) that this information isn't spelt out. They have a "Contact Us" section - I'd suggest asking them.

The specs in the user guide say 100V to 240V AC.

Bought one from amazon few months ago. Uses the same power cable from the adapter to the wall like your PC's power supply unit.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Should be fine, it's multi voltage so you'd just need an international socket adapter or a jug/kettle cord.
