I'm not about to start a(nother) computer holy war, but I note that the Smartphone forum is split into Palm, RIM, Symbian and Windows, but the Desktop forum isn't split into Apple and PC.

I'm about to have the best of both worlds at home; PC for serious work and Mac for the family (cause I'm sick of fixing the PC when they break it). I think they're different tools for different jobs, and enjoy both OS's equally.

Just an observation (unless I'm missing something). B

Yeah you are missing something:

As you can see there are forums for Windows, Mac OS and Linux. That covers everything. Also Apples are now PC's ... (or so they try telling us)

Not to be too pedantic, but technically Apples have always been PC's... PC = Personal Computer. MF usually makes that distinction on the forums and the thread categories probably reflect that.

PC = Personal Computer. If it's running Mac OS, Linux or Windows it doesn't matter, it is still personal.

The distinctions here on Geekzone are in terms of hardware and software. For software we have Windows, Mac OS and Linux forums. For hardware (or platform) we have Desktop and Laptop forums. We should even have a Server forum really...

Thanks Brad - you answered my (newbie) question.

As for the whole "PC" discussion; I think this could take (and possibly already has taken) a thread of its own.

When a term comes into common language for a 'common meaning', surely this 'common meaning' then becomes its definition. Examples include Xerox and Jandal. In fact to research this I went to the easiest (and quickest) source I could - Wikipedia.

Under the community defined definition, PC refers to any 'personal' computer be it Wintel, Lintel or Mactel(?). However as you read down even the article becomes confused:

"Good word processor programs would also appear for many home computers, in particular the introduction of Microsoft Word for the Apple Macintosh in 1985 (while earlier versions of Word had been created for the PC, it became popular initially through the Macintosh)"

I suppose Apple uses this very confusion to perputuate the common terminology with their Mac vs. PC ads...

Anyway I shall bow to my more learned colleagues (for the moment)
