It's been a while since I've tinkered around with old desktops so I'm after some advise on which RAM upgrade would be compatible for a box I'm helping clean-up for a friend.

Box currently has 2x slots fulled labeled "512MB 1Rx8 PC2-4200U-444-12-D3"

I'm looking to upgrade it to a total of 4gb (2x2GB) so would this be compatible?:

Depends on what the box is going to do, is for general use or gaming/Video Editing/Rendering which may require a little more than 4GB RAM.
I have the crucial RAM supplied by PBTech and they are good value for money.

Not too sure on compatibility, ill leave that to an expert :)

Start with the motherboard manual to determine the ram capacity of the slots - some mobos require dual slots to be filled, some, only one.

Check the website of your motherboard manufacturer. Anything with only 1GB of RAM is probably obsolete, may not be worth buying RAM for it.

You forgot Core 2 Quad and Duos ;) Which are still damn good machines for basic stuff.

Also check into pricing of RAM vs upgraded mobo/RAM/CPU - sometimes could work out better off for a few extra $$.

Thanks, found some on TradeMe for <$30 each with warranty.

Now just need a Windows 7 key and we're done: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=77&topicid=171523
