Hi all

As the title says.

I have a friend who has an xtra email address and uses Windows Live Mail to organise e-mail on a desktop PC.

They now want to be able to access all e-mail, folders, contacts etc on several devices and obviously the current system won't enable them to do that.

I have suggested just using the Yahoo!Xtra login in web based e-mail which could them be accessed from any device at any time.

The problem I've got is importing the current stored e-mail from Windows Live Mail back into Yahoo!Xtra.

Does anybody have a solution for this?

Your post is a bit confusing to me. Windows live mail appears to be a hosted service which you could connect to from any device you want. Not sure how you're getting xtra email there but I haven't used ISP email in decades.

Get an account on any IMAP enabled email server. Use Thunderbird to copy all the email there.

I do a lot of work with small business email - moving email hosting to Gmail/Fastmail, migrations of email from clients and servers to that new email, that sort of thing. Get in touch if they want someone to do it for them. Happy to give advice of course.

Windows Live Mail is a POP/IMAP client - part of Windows Live tools.

Your friend will have to create a new IMAP email account on Windows Live Mail client and copy the email/folders from the POP account to the new one. This should upload the emails.

He can then check via webmail to see if it is all there.

They need a professional email system, not a system intended for home users, since they want contacts accessible on several devices

Outlook + hosted exchange.
They will need to spend some money.

No they won't

Freitasm is correct.
If it was me I would create a new outlook.co.nz/.com address or gmail, setup the new email address to pop access the current email box (for new mail). Export the contact and upload them to outlook/gmail.
Then on the email client I would add the new address via imap and move the emails from the pop box to the imap (which takes care of the old emails).

Might take a while for them to all upload but they will get there.
I would then just use the new outlook/gmail address, you will still get the email from the old account into the new one due to gmail popping the old address.
You could even send from the old address via gmail if needed.

Windows live mail was Microsofts replacement for Outlook Express. But it was a really bad choice of names, and confused everyone. It should however do the job fine, and work in a simialr way to thunderbird, although not sure if it has IMAP as haven't looked at it for years.
