Hi

I recently decided to upgrade to a new computer as I had a friend staying with us who is alot more tech savvy then I am. He chose the items for my PC and I picked the case (Silverstone Lc-17 in case you wondered) I had to wait 3 weeks for the CPUs as they weren't available anywhere in NZ, so once they had arrived he was gone, my flatmate and I put the PC together and it works.

Everything was cool until I tried playing games on it, it has frozen a few times playing games and the CPU/system temperature isnt too high, I installed Easy Tune 5 Pro from my motherboard disk so I could check.

I dont think I'm pushing my hardware to the limits, I'm not overclocking anything and just running WOW on a medium widescreen res. I'm running HDMI.

The PC specs are:
Western Digital Caviar SE 320GB SATA II HDD
4GB Dual Kit DDR2-800 Dual CHannel SD RAM
Gigabyte GA-x38-DS4 Intel X38 ATX motherboard
Palit ATI HD 3850 PCIE 256MB HDMI
Intel Core 2 Duo E8200 2.66GHz 6MB

The PC runs fine if I'm just running a movie or surfing the net, it only seems to have problems when I play a game, which is a big reason I spent as much money as I did.

I'm hoping someone may be able to offer a suggestion or tip for me to try and sort this out before having to resort to paying someone to look at it for me.

Thanks in advance, Zeph

First thing to do is download the latest catalyst drivers for your vid card. Also go to your motherboard manufacturers site and download the latest drivers for your board (check for bios updates as well).
Do you get lock-ups running any other games?
There's a handy program called prime95 which can torture test your system, run it for a while and if it spits out errors (particularly in the first 10 minutes) then you might have a hardware problem (possibly ram).

See if the updated drivers fix your issues before going further.

And is the power supply enough for the whole thing?

I will try updating the drivers and then I'll run that test program.

My power supply is a Silverstone Element ST56F ATX 560W.

Did you check if the fan on the graphic card is working? The fan may have an additional connector for power or could be faulty when you bought it.

560W is enough to run your system.

Hi guys

I really want to thank you for you inputs, has helped me alot and I really do appreciate it.

Vid card fan is working fine as far as I can tell.

I ran Prime95 and this popped up

Was wondering what exactly it meant though?

Try running with only one of the RAM modules and see what happens.
Try the other one by itself as well and see if you get a different result.

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

When I ran my first torture test it found an error after ike 46mins.

I removed 2 sticks of RAM (I have 4x1GB sticks) and ran another torture test which found an error after less than 10mins.

I then removed the remaining 2 sticks of RAM and then put the 2 I had originally removed back in and ran another torture test, which found an error after 2 hours 8 minutes.

Everytime the error had something to do with rounding, its supposed to be less than 4.0 apparently, and I seem to float between 4.9-5.0.

http://www.memtest.org/

If it's a Ram issue this program will narrow it down.

I have downloaded memtest and have found that either one of my memory sticks is faulty or the slot on my motherboard isnt working, will post an update once I know more.

Top marks for tenacity. I would have thrown it out the window by now.
