Hi,

I'm looking to buy a new PC as my current one is 8 years old and doesn't handle editing Gopro videos, it basically just shuts down so I think it's time for a upgrade. All I want to be able to do is edit HD videos, mostly gopro footage 1080p so I can upload to youtube . I like using the Adobe suite of products for editing and video/photos. I don't want to spend a heap of money as it's just for  fun and not for professional editing.

I've been trying to catch up on the latest cpu's and video cards on youtube but I think I'm even more confused which way to go. Some suggest AMD over Intel for cpu as the more cores the better for rendering videos but I'm still a little confused.

I am eyeing up a couple on trademe, do any of you think these would be good rigs for the price and for what I want to do?

Thanks for your help!

the biggest and most important question is, what is your budget?

As for the question of "Intel vs AMD for more cores" bit -

plug in the various CPUs on all your shortlists within your budget - into the internet and search multicore benchmark. Make sure the benchmark done on the same program or at least same website so you are comparing apples with apples. Also helps to see the single core benchmark comparison.

TBH at their pricepoint and for what they want to do, the whole AMD vs Intel means little.

I prefer intel

All have HDDs and no SSD, one lists a 740, another a 730 graphics card! Sorry, a " Nvidia Gefore GT730 2G DDR3" - 2 generations old already. At least put a 1050 in something.

I'm just looking for a decent machine that would fit in between the $800-$1300 bracket.

I'm a bit confused as the ones on trademe seem to be as powerful if not better than the ones at computer lounge (when in that $800-$1300 bracket). More ram, better processor, I'm not sure what I'm missing?

I would have thought the onboard graphics of the 6700 would be at least as good as the gefore 730?

But aren't SSD small or are you saying I would need both?

Would you have a recommendation for a pc in the $800-$1300 bracket or what you would buy cpu, video card and memory wise?

Probably missing the after sales service.

For gopro video editing you will need a good graphics card on top of the good CPU you buy. If I were you I'd buy the middle one in your link, ask to swap the geforce gpu for 16GB ram and then buy yourself a decent GPU and SSD. That's all you need for decent gopro video editing.

In that case the Computer Lounge "Sleeper" from the link posted above might be ideal:
Its 20% off till the end of tonight and is pre-assembled so there will be a fast turn around. The only issues I can see are that the GPU might be over kill and you may want a storage Hard Drive to go along with the SSD. Other than that, this is about the best deal there is in that price range currently in terms of decent machines.

Also in regards to the TradeMe systems, as a rule, they're generally overpriced or they make use of obsolete or just bad components: Examples are cheap Power supplies and the GT730 in the machine you linked to. In fact, I think Skylakes on board video (HD530) is equal to, or only marginally slower than said GT730 anyway.

a ssd is generally small and does cost more but its many many times faster than a 1tb or 2tb drive when it comes to accessing and writing data. This will speed up your computer noticeably.

The ones you linked to on TM may have a slightly faster processor, but they have a slower HDD and worse graphics cards

The Computer Lounge ones will perform way better for the same/similar cost.

If you currently have a HDD in you PC you can transfer it into the new PC and use it for storing data.

Have a look at benchmarks on GPU video encoding, I seem to recall linus tech tips did something aboot it a little while ago. If getting video up to youtube is your prime concern that is where you can see huge benefits. Also for youtube ingest if you have really fast upload then it can be better to forgo some of the more advanced encoding options and just pick a massive bitrate and hit go, as they recompress it anyway.

HDD for storage, and SSD for your apps and stuff is the way to go, the video access when you are encoding it pretty low rate and linear so there is not the huge benefit in an SSD that people would lead you to believe. While scrubbing around the timeline yeah, SSD will be better but nothing much that will impact the export process unless you are putting many many videos ontop of each other. You;re only talking HD actioncam footage, not cinema grade bitrates.

SSDs are extremely fast at moving files but cost more.

My suggestion:

CPU 6600K with cheapest Z170 Mobo

Or 6600 with 1151 Mobo (the cheapest you can find)

RAM 16GB DDR4 (2 x GB that is the cheapest DDR4 you can find)

Graphics card - Nvidia 1050, 1060 or 1070. You get about double the performance going up each step at about a 1.5 increase in price

Benchmark aside, Intel / Nvidia is more reliable, it just works. AMD/ATI generally inferior ...

Is there 20% off this? That would bring it to your bracket and will be the awesomest video editing rig you can make
