Each year I evaluate which AV software I use, with the efficacy of the software the main criteria. But Norton’s NZ pricing has always bugged me. Up to a few years ago, you could buy in the USA, but now you have to go through the Oz/NZ website, where they load the price.

The following are prices for Norton Security Premium which includes multiple device (PC, Android, Apple), 25GB cloud backup. The standard Norton web pages (and most of the other AV software) always show a “standard” price and a “discounted” price. I’ve only shown the “discounted” price for new subscriptions below. All the following prices are in converted NZD.

USA. 10 devices, $72.27

UK. 10 devices, $71.62.

NZ. 5 devices, $99.99.

NZ. 5 devices. Renewal to existing subscription through login, $149.99 (no-one with any sense does this anyway.)

So not only is NZ more expensive by around 40%, you only get to use it on half the number of devices. To get it on the same number of devices as the USA & UK, this makes it 270% more expensive.

Now, is this fair or not?

BTW, I actually like Norton, this is a post about pricing, not the software itself. And yes I know there is free stuff out there.

Nokia 6110, 6210, 6234, Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1, Huawei Ideos X5 (Windows Mobile), Samsung Galaxy SIII, LG G4, OnePlus 5, iPhone Xs Max (briefly), S21 Ultra. And I thought I hadn't had many phones - but the first one around 1997.

1). VPN

2). Buy US product

3). ???

4). Profit

Edit: I should say that it should be obvious that different markets will bear different prices and the US price does not include sales tax. All you should be concerned with is solving that issue and forcing Norton to reconsider their pricing scheme with a view to teaching them about the nature of the internet.

NZ$ or US$ ?

Norton NZ price also includes GST, so thats another 15% on the cost of US Norton

Anyway, $20 is nothing. Honestly if worried about $20 then simply dont buy the product.
Differing regional prices is a con. Either accept it or go elsewhere. :-)

Once you move away from NortonAv, no one ever goes back to it.
If you want to stay with Norton, I would go with the basic AV. You dont really need all the other add-ons on the Symantec Security.

UHD:

Don't really want to go there. It just gets too messy.

1101:

Prices are NZ$. It's not $20 difference, it's $120 difference. The NZ price is for 5 seats, the US/UK for 10 seats, so you need to double the NZ price to get the equivalent.

This is not really about the price I pay, but the downunder rip-off. Interestingly the UK always used to have the same issue, but their prices are now similar to the USA.

In the past used Kaspersky, Bitdefender & some of the free ones. Kaspersky was a dog, hopefully it has improved. Bitdefender, was OKish, but I bought a family pack (which at the time was unlimited seats), but the license would only allow 3 seats. That took 3 weeks of increasingly grumpy emails to sort out.

Norton? I've no real issues at all with it. It does it's job as far as I can see and seems to be a very low overhead. It is NOT like the product of 5 years ago - which is when I moved to others. I don't actually use most of the bundled stuff (cloud backup, parent controls etc), but ideally I need 6 seats so go for the version that gives the best price per seat.

Not really sure what is messy about a VPN... Turn it on, pay for product and install then turn it off. No issues.
