Hi

 

I have been using Chrome as my preferred browser for some time but of late it keeps freezing or very slow to load a new page especially if I click on a link or bookmark.

 

i have tried clearing cache etc and uninstalling and reinstalling.

 

i am now using Firefox or Edge with no problems I run surface devices with windows 10

 

is this just me, if not has anyone found a solution

Not just you, I have come across this also. New tabs can take up to 5 seconds before the page begins loading while Task Manager shows 100% disk activity during that period.

 

 

I have just put it down to how Chrome manages its processes and memory, seems to have come about along with the update that suspended background tabs one or two versions back (3-4 months ago). The days of huge memory leaks seem to be over when keeping Chrome running for weeks on end, so I guess that might be the trade-off.

 

 

I'm surprised it is that bad on Surface which should run on an SSD? I thought it was mainly affecting slow HDD users.

Does it happen if started with "--disable-extensions --disable-plugins" ?

Do you have MalwareBytes installed? I've found out it makes browsing extremely slow.

Im still on 58.0.3029.110 (64-bit) because I dont really want to restart it right now and its fine.

 

What version are the problems on?

No extensions/plugins here and no Malwarebytes AV (just Defender). Chrome 59.0.3071.86 here.

 

I guess the main symptom is when clicking links or opening new tabs, it can take up to 5 seconds with 100% disk activity before navigation begins. There are no "waiting for xx extension" status messages.

 

 

Just to clarify it doesn't happen on every page navigation or new tab, presumably only when Chrome does some sort of process management. Overall memory/commit usage seems fine from a Task Manager perspective. Hope I'm describing similar to what the OP is experiencing.

I use a few plugins, mostly ad blocking, and my machines have two different antivirus products. I don't allow AV software to put plugins into Chrome. Chrome is super fast for me.

 

Plugins / extensions are the likely culprit.

Chrome updated earlier and it seems better.

 

 

I am wondering whether this is simply to do with key portions of Chrome's cache/temporary files being written to non-contiguous disk space upon updating (i.e. on a system with low free disk space). Can a fragmented disk cause such a significant hit to application performance? That's the best theory I can come up with... that is unless the update actually changed something.

fragmentation only matters on a spinning rust drive. Does everyone with the problem still have those?

I've got Chrome v59.0.3071.104 (64-bit) and am running MalwareBytes on an old laptop (2008) running Win10 and with 2 x HDD's installed (HP HDX18 1099UX). No issues at all here, I'm finding Chrome nice and responsive.

Three times Chrome all fine here.

 

one on 5400 spinner, one on 7200 spinner and one on SSD.

I am running latest version, no plugins or extensions 

 

am happy with Firefox but just wanted to make sure it wasn't something simple I had done wrong
