Yeah, could probably get the 8700K 4.9Ghz into NZ for around $700. That's probably only $100 or so more than NZ retail so possibly worth it. Still pretty pricey though and an NZ retail could come up on special.

Several of the i9-7900X reviews I have read, have been managing to get all ten cores running at around the 4.5Ghz with AIO liquid coolers without delidding.  The whole delidding thing sounds a bit scary to me, and if I was building a gaming rig, I think I'd use the 8700K despite it only having 16 PCIe lanes.  The money you saved over not buying a high end i9X or Threadripper, could be put towards one of these:

Is anyone aware of a CPU delidding service in NZ or any stores that will delid for you with warranty etc? 

 

I don't know whether it's true but rumour has it that the newer CPUs since 6xxx are more overclockable, 

For example, I bought a 6700K (turbo boost 4.2GHz for one core), and immediately OCed to 4.7GHz all4 cores with fan cooling (and getting temps of 50-60C)

Probably not answering your post but I hope I'd just buy another CPU and am able to OC to my heart's content without worrying about lottery.

The i9 7900X price is even crazier! The direct competitor to the 8700K would be the Skylake-X i7 7800X but the 8700K is proving to be the better gaming chip. 

Has anyone brought from Newegg NZ? I would just be a little concerned about warranty and RMA return time frames and wonder if a local purchase could save some hassle?
