Hey guys,

So looking at building my own comp for around $1800. Don't need any peripheral hardware but wanting to have a GTX 1070 gfx and i5 3.6 cpu in the comp. is it possible to build a decent comp for 1800 with those in it?

Wait for the new 1070 replacement.. The 1070Ti is the same price as the 1070 and there is no stock. You'd be silly to buy a 10 series now.

RTX 2070 is next up for the new series, but its looking to be priced around $900nzd which is half your budget.

Personally I would see if I could find a second hand 1070 or 1060 6GB. Maybe even the RX580 if it's on sale for $400 or less.

The market now is whack, mid-range moving up to high-end prices. If you want to get a mid-range now and be done with it stick with Ryzen 2600(x) or Intel i5 and get the best card with the rest of you budget. If you want to keep it for a bit longer or upgrade later, get a Ryzen 2700(x) or Intel i7/i9 9xxx and a mid-range card now then upgrade later to a better gfx card.

I've seen some 1080's going for $500-$700 recently. WELL worth it!

I agree with ya there, the pricing is a joke.

I feel a Ryzen offering is the best bang for buck currently in terms of a CPU. But the GPU market is to unstable to make a judgement. I am sure someone here will sell their GPU cheaply when the RTX ranges extends. I'd be deal hunting rather than buying new to be honest.

RAM is a minimum of $300 for 16GB DDR, GPU will be $800 or so, We are already at $1100 before a SSD, MOBO, Cooler, PSU and case..

With the NZ dollar tanking at the moment, I think the price pain will only get worse. Maybe you will have to take this into account with your budget. What $1800 dollars bought you last year will be more like $2000-2100 now.
The specs you quote aren't really entry level though. Having said that PBTech have upgrade boxes from $600 to $2000+ so it must be do-able. Don't have an OS installed. Just depends what midrange actually means to you.

Personally my go-to SOP would be a solid platform first, get a i7 8700k or 2700x. You can always pop the gfx card out and upgrade that, but you're much more likely to keep the cpu/mobo/ram/psu/case etc.

If I was a bit conservative i'd build a Ryzen 2700 with a B450 motherboard and 16GB 3200/c16 RAM. Could buy from Amazon to save some cash on the mobo and ram.

A solid(!) 550W psu, Seasonic Focus Plus / Corsair rmx (v2) / evga supernova g2 (g3). Only get a 650W or higher if wanting to get a powerhouse card like a 1080ti/2080ti/Titan or two cards in the future.

Add a 512GB SSD (Crucial mx500) and that should be around $1300~. Hunt around for a 1060 6GB or RX580 for sub $400 and it will be a good machine. Later on sell the 1060/580 and buy a higher end card later on when there is more budget.

What are you going to be using the computer for? No point getting an i7 or 2700X unless you specifically need one of those for what you plan to do

To be perfectly clear, if you are purely gaming you will get better performance with Intel. If you encode video (stream), code multi-threaded apps, run VM's then Ryzen will perform better.

If you have money later on then the i9 9900k will do the best of both but will likely cost $900nzd by itself (it should work on z370 motherboards, update the bios with a 8th gen cpu first)

AMD

CPU = AMD 2700x - $500

Mobo = MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC - $280

RAM = 2x8GB (16GB) DDR4 3200MHz CL16 - $300-330 (Memory speed is important for Ryzen systems. G.skill/Team Group/Corsair)

PSU = Seasonic Focus Plus Gold 550W - $180 (OR Corsair RM550x v1 or v2)

SSD = Crucial MX500 500GB - $150-170

GPU = EVGA GTX1060 6GB - $500 (you can look for a second hand 1070 for around $550-600)

Case = Phanteks P300 - $100 (this is really your choice, find one you like)

Total = around $2000

Intel

CPU = Intel i7 8700k - $625 (Jesus this used to be $550 across the board)

CPU cooler = Cryorig H7 $70 (you need this for Intel, AMD comes with one in the box)

Mobo = ASRock Z370 Extreme4 - $270

(rest is same)

RAM = 2x8GB (16GB) DDR4 3200MHz CL16 - $300-330 (Not as important, but still beneficial on Intel)

PSU = Seasonic Focus Plus Gold 550W - $180 (OR Corsair RM550x v1 or v2)

SSD = Crucial MX500 500GB - $150-170

GPU = EVGA GTX1060 6GB - $500 (or 1070)

Case = Phanteks P300 - $100 (your choice)

Total = around $2200

Quick / ignorant / irrelevant question if I may. Doesn't a AMD / Ryzen anything require you to buy a graphics card (there's no way around it) so doesn't that negate the price advantage somewhat ?

The intel would be better suited for performance in what you do. Not to say Ryzen won't be up to par, maybe 10~% less on games like csgo etc. but quite similar in graphic intensive/4K games.

Trademe is an obvious one and quite straightforward. The trade sub-forum here and/or gpforums.

A note on motherboard / ram / ssd. Often these are around $50 cheaper on Amazon shipped from the US. If you can deal with the risks of ordering from there you could save a bit on these parts depending on the currency strength. GPU/CPU are a bit expensive to risk and the PSU needs to be NZ spec. (Risks are long delivery time and potential hassle for returns. If buying listings from Amazon fulfilled then warranty is covered but shipping might cost)

When the 8700k was similar price i suppose so. Now that its gone up by $70 (plus you need a cooler) you might as well get a cheapo gfx card to run the Ryzen as the iGPU on the i7 isn't that noteworthy. Bonus points if you have a old gfx card lying around to use while you squirrel away for the new shiny.

Nope, there are a couple of Ryzen CPUs with built in graphics.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, don't think I'll be buying anything for a while - the main PC is getting on a bit and it would be nice to replace but can't afford to do so just cause of that, will just have to wait till it expires (and its fine for what it gets used for).
