Chrome seems to be doing everything it can to prevent autoplay disabling. This is slowly driving me crazy, especially on sites like CNN. Nothing works to block this, not extensions, not flags, not content settings. On the latest versions of Chrome, autoplay simply cannot be disabled.

Does anyone know a fix for this? Is there any way to get around it? I have looked into it a little, without diving too deep, and my impression is that this has to do with AI gaming issues. However I am not a gamer and I just want an autoplay on/off switch to keep CNN and other sites that don’t respect user wishes from annoying me.

Alternatively, can anyone recommend another browser that doesn’t have this problem? Other than this one thing, I like Chrome and I want to stick as closely to it as possible, so no Firefox or anything like that. Is there a Chrome-style browser that lets you disable autoplay but retains other Chrome functions?

Can't edit preceding but never mind. Chrome seems to have fixed it. My version just updated to 71 and the unwanted autoplay has stopped. Thank goodness.

I've been having the same problem with Chrome, despite also having tried plug-ins etc. Autoplaying videos drive me crazy, especially when it's so easy to accidentally run the mouse over the image. I'm interested to see if the updated version of Chrome fixes it for me as well...

There is no way currently that I am aware of to prevent this on the latest version of Chrome, adblock doesn't even do it. Fortunately the websites that employ this AutoPlay tactic are limited to spammy click bait sites (media websites). I don't generally visit spam sites so not something I actually noted.

CNN seems a lot better with 71, though i still get some autoplay. Not sure yet if this is the answer.

I ditched Chrome and now use Brave which is based on Chrome and can utilise Chrome extensions. The advantage of Brave is that it blocks ads and trackers (it's currently blocking 6 trackers on GZ as I type).

I have always been a Chrome user, but after recent updates, it was getting a little too intrusive in its behaviour, so I uninstalled it. The only disadvantage with Brave is that it wont play some of the in-bedded videos on sites (eg. the ones you are complaining about not being able to turn off autoplay). If I want to view one of these, I simply copy the URL into Edge to view, but it's not very often I need to swap out of Brave. I would highly recommend Brave - their Android browser app is identical to the Chrome android browser.

For those interested - these are the 6 tracking sites on GZ that were blocked by Brave:
