Hey guys,

I have a pretty old PC set up i5 4690k, 16gb ram, 1070, matx lga1150 mobo. It does everything I need it to do so I have never thought about upgrading. But lately my CPU has been capping out at 100% during warzone so I was thinking about upgrading it to a 4790k (or if its even worth it?) I was thinking about a whole mobo, cpu, ram upgrade but I'm on a budget and really dont even need to upgrade.

I know its a long shot considering its a super old CPU but I think its the best I can get for a lga1150.

Any help would he appreciated it.

As extra piece of advise. A 4790k won’t do much. You want real gains? You’ll need new CPU, mobo and ram

I went from a 4690k to a 4790k, and yeah it did make a noticeable improvement.

I got given mine, I probably wouldn't have done the upgrade if I had to pay. They are not terribly priced on ebay ~(NZD$200) now, but they are 7 years old and are outperformed by the current generation I3's which cost $150 (albeit you'd need a new motherboard and RAM too).

If your budget can run to even a very modest current generation CPU/motherboard/RAM I'd do that, but if you can't, then $200 for a 4790k would give you a boost.

A decent air cooler (if you don't already have one) and some time OCing may also get you moderate performance increases for not much cost, and the cooler should still be useful after a platform upgrade.

Your current CPU is 4 cores and 4 threads,

If you can find a 4790K for a good price and in good condition it will be an ok upgrade for you, if you can get it for a good price.

However be mindful of spending too much for low gain.

Your platform is now around 7 years old, so considering that it wouldnt be too much to factor in a new platform.

Cheapest I could find the i7 4790 not K version was $150, for $160 it "might be worth it" https://www.trademe.co.nz/computers/components/cpus/intel/listing-3084780456.htm?rsqid=832824235d6446eb8f6543254989e192-004 but for a few hundred you can get a new platform which IMO is a better option, maybe even looking a second hand motherboard/cpu/ram bundles others are selling.

Are you running a graphics card? I don’t see one mentioned in your system spec. By far the most important component in any gaming rig is the graphics card. No CPU upgrade can deliver what a decent GPU can.

An Nvidia 970 GTX or similar would complement your existing components nicely without draining your bank account. Expect to pay around $150 & then enjoy your gaming.

If the CPU load is 100% on all four cores then the game engine is likely heavily threaded, so you probably just need a 4C/8T i7.

One other suggestion is to first try capping the frame rate at 60FPS, this can reduce CPU load on platforms with a powerful graphics card & comparatively weak CPU.

The OP mentioned a 1070 so has an ok GPU. The main gains of the cpu upgrade tend to be getting higher frame rates rather than fidelity. I'm still sporting an even older 3570K and considered the same thing up to that gens i7, but honestly I can't justify it. Like this poster I keep hitting 100% CPU usage and it is getting annoying but not annoying enough to justify the upgrade right now. When the time comes (which isn't too far off I don't think) I think I'll be upping mine to a ryzen 5 minimum and that should see me through for a good while, really hoping a 5600 comes out to replace the 3600 but in the current market I can't see that happening soon.

One thing I've found that might help is watch out for Windows defender actively scanning downloads as that tends to send my cpu usage rocketing to 100% whenever the system downloads big files and made flight sim completely unplayable while it scanned the on the fly terrain downloads. Shutting that off has really helped my cpu problems, that and AMD fixing their gpu driver to not eat cpu usage looking for a folder that exists.

Save yourself the heart ache, buy an 11400 or an 11600K, with a motherboard and some RAM.

If that's too expensive, look to the used market, but there's really no where to go with that hardware, you need to go to DDR4.

An Nvidia 970 GTX for $150 ummm where would YOU find that? They are going for way more than that!

If you are not overclocking that CPU already , then go ahead and try you should get 4400mhz easily . Or more with decent cooling if you really want to push it to the limits.
