First question: is Active Backup for Business a free add-on with the DS1621+ or $$$?

And if it's free, should I keep using Veeam Windows client to save backups to the NAS, or switch to the Synology offering?

If it's not free, I'll just keep using Veeam, obviously. 😀

I use active backup on my DS1821+ and its free.  It backs up my NAS VMs as servers pcs, my ESXi 6.7 homelab via Vcenter, and my various windows powered laptops and pcs all fine and using deduplication.

hmm my old now extinct Windows Home Server did dedupe too.

That could save quite a bit of space across 7 Win10 pcs.

yep I've saved a lot of space using it.  I find it pretty good and it works with hyperbackup too if you want to have more redundancy in your backup.

Is Hyperbackup a tool I could use to replace FreeFileSync for copying the NAS data to the Windows DrivePool pc?

erm... if you can get an rsync server up on the target device then it looks to support that?  Hyperbackup was predominately designed for synology NAS (or C2 backup) and various cloud providers... but it does support Rsync, WebDAV and Swift targets on another device.

Having played with both products fairly extensively in both enterprise and SMB usage, i'd sooner go to veeam.

Puts you in a good place should you want to step-up your capabilities at a later date, the free tier is actually fairly decent now though!

if you can i'd be sticking it to write to a CoW filesystem.

These days for any business deployment i set a requirement of XFS hardened repos, not only does the benefit having relinking blocks but immutable storage (assuming the machine is actually locked down correctly) is a must for any crypto attack.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Honestly, I had alot to learn when a large customer (Not of my current employer) got hit with Lockbit 2.0.

That thing is the nastiest crypto i've ever seen. ended up finding the point of ingress, even in a fairly well lock-downed environment... it sat and waited for enough access to reach into the hypervisors via Veeam, plan it's attack; exfiltrate data on a tiny circuit and find the best time to be unnoticed for letting rip the encryption and deletion of replicas etc.

Full rebuild, massive redesign of their security. Every single step of the way, anytime a change is asked for having discussions about how best to do what they used to ask for, in a far more secure way while still making everything work..

Alot more to the story, but that gets into a little more identifiable information
