When I saw this post, I thought I'd try giving the software a go, seeing as I have a 365 Family license.

Today, it seems to have stopped working, and now says I haven't a valid subscription - despite my OneDrive, Word, etc still working ok.

Defender has stopped on two different devices.

Is this just me, or has anyone else got the same issue?

Same issue here. Tried installing on an Android tablet, and it failed saying I needed a valid plan. Opened it on my phone and it no longer works. Also a family account.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Keep calm, and carry on posting.

Installed on family's computers and it seems to lose the login in at least one machine, which sometimes doesn't even show on the list.

Still not working, so uninstalling.

TBH, it was dramatically slowing certain applications [Python-based] on my MacBook anyway, so no great loss...

So, is this an upgraded version of Windows Security, that will eventually replace it?

Also started working for my devices too.

First thoughts:

  • The issues on day one (now resolved) were a pain in the behind. It even prompted me to buy another years worth of MS 365 Family even though I still had an active subscription.
  • After resolution - installed on my Windows 11, wife and my iPhones without any issues. On the iOS front, did prompt to configure a VPN however did explain why and what the VPN would not do (eg. data collection)
  • Nice simplified interface. Very good to see across multiple devices.

I also saw that there was some Microsoft family options when I saw some of the website content, completely unrelated to Defender the app... but looks quite comprehensive and will seriously look at using it on my daughters devices (a mix of Android and iOS).

I have Norton too, purchased through a GZ affiliate link - appears to play nice with Defender, but one critique of Norton is that it starting to prompt/nag me to purchase more functionality. Eg. Norton Utilities Ultimate, Norton 360 for gaming, Antitrack. Some of these prompts are notifications, but others are embedded into the functionality eg. Smart Scan. I suspect that when my 2 year subscription is up, I may very well consider using Defender + windows built in AV as my security solution.

One of our laptops keeps getting logged out - or not updating the security status when logged in.

My Android phone logged out today. I tried to log back in and got a page with a toggle/switch to enable a VPN tunnel - obviously a business option. I tap [Back] and it logged out again. Logged in again and this time it worked as before.

It seems Microsoft is back at using paying end users as unpaid testers.

I’ve noticed that occasionally you’ll get no data symptoms on iOS when the vpn tunnel (for the url checking) doesn't get automatically reestablished. Doesn’t happen all the time but when it does, you are looking at either manually toggling the VPN or a device restart.

Took a little while to figure out as iOS was showing good wifi (eg. Ip assigned, signal etc) and symptoms were identical across other AP.

Also noticed that when going from Wifi to mobile, there is a extra period of no data transfer whilst the vpn tunnel gets reestablished. Quite evident with teams meetings - to the point that I’m considering disabling it when I’m working.

Are you using it on a business account? I can't see a tunnel option on Office 365 Family.

Family account - on iOS, it creates a vpn purely to check the URL’s (I assume DNS must go through this vpn)… normal data goes via the wifi/cellular data route.
