I've got a Dell AIO 5488 (nice system with touchscreen) which I've decided to start using for some things, but having unusual network issue.

This used to be at one of my employers offices, and used every day with Windows 10, and had zero issues. Upgraded that office a few months ago and I took the Dell home.

I installed Linux Mint on it initially, and worked fine. Then didn't touch the system again until this weekend. It would not connect to the internet, via cable or wifi - it said it was on a network but no traffic.

So I reinstalled the OS - initially got full internet, then the browser stopped working. But the updater software etc worked fine and could talk to my home server.

Installed Windows. Same issue, could get Windows Updates, but browser failed to load anything. Noticed it was getting a 169.x.x.x address - but how was it getting the updates in that case.....  tried manually setting IP etc. No change.

Installed Ubuntu. Same issue AGAIN. I can download updates etc, but NO browsing, and cannot access anything else on my network.

I've checked the router (Fritz) for anything unusual and cant see any issues there (rebooted it anyway).

The only thing "wrong" that I've found, is that the CMOS battery needs replacing. But I've never experienced this sort of issue before with a dead CMOS battery.....  anyone else ?

I'll replace the battery if I can find one in my stores, but in meantime, any other ideas ? If battery does not work, I'll factory reset the router and see if that helps....

And it's a Wi-Fi connection? Or ethernet? Have you tried ethernet?

It sounds like a weird DNS related issue. Does ping show resolution for the updater sites, and not the other sites you tried? Also could try with a system user like the updater.

It sounds like some network service might have died. Does the log show anything. Replacing CMOS battery seems sensible. Hypothetically some time related network security failure.

Apart from the interesting exploration I'd be more inclined to check for network driver variations after the cmos.

@xpd says he tried Linux and Windows, so not sure about drivers.

It could be a faulty network adapter, hence my question if it happens in both Wi-Fi and Ethernet.

If yes, then look at the network configuration (Are you using a network that needs approval of new MAC addresses? Are you running a split DNS that uses MAC lists?)

If no, then look at faulty network hardware (try a USB Ethernet or Wi-Fi adapter, change network port or ethernet cable and so on.

As for the CMOS battery, is the date/time correct after boot? If not, it would cause problems with HTTPS connections, but you should still be able to ping, run DNS lookups, etc.

There are so many things to try; these are just some options.

Well, replaced battery, no change, so factory reset router. It **** itself. Got it up and running again, but its taking 5mins at a time to load its own pages for config.

So, new router is on the cards.

On the plus side, the weird connectivity issue appears to have gone :D

Fritz 7490

It seems to be behaving itself again at the moment, but not gonna trust it. Almost caused a divorce with factory reset - wife needs internet for her study.

Will prob just grab a basic RouterBoard from PBtech.

Any chance of using a USB wifi adapter or network adapter to check if your internal hardware is not faulty..?

Most OSes (Windows/Linux/etc) will autoassign a 169.x address for itself if it can't get anything via DHCP -- so could be the router's DHCP service wasn't giving out a lease for some reason.

I had a somewhat similar issue when my DHCP pool was exhausted due to too many devices. I increased the pool size and it's been OK since then.

Sometimes people are surprised when the "allow new MAC addresses" option is not checked in a Fritzbox or when all DHCP leases are still reserved.

Only had about 18 devices at the time.

Never had the issue previously (I work on a lot of systems to tidy up for TM throughout a week) but with the router playing up on its own interface as well, well, didnt bode well ;)

Have borrowed a ROG Rapture for now :D But will look at a small Routerboard as permanent replacement.

Apple devices love to change their random mac address it seems, and that exhausts the pool

Wouldn't the DHCP leases expire tho? Unless the DHCP lease time is quite long I guess -- probably a good argument for keeping it short e.g. 30mins.
