Hi,

I recently bought this HDD as an external HDD, effectively just it in a standard enclosure.

Initially it was giving me problems externally; disconnecting mid way through transfers etc. So I decided to put it into my desktop and see if it worked.

With all the power disconnected I connected it up as usual and turned the computer on and it didnt spin up. I put it back in the enclosure and nothing.

I thought it was initially the thing was faulty from the beginning so I managed to get a replacement however when I tried to put this one into the computer the same thing happened. Only this time my files were all on it...

I have heard that this is sometimes the logic board and you can swap this out for another one exactly the same and it sometimes works.

I am wondering whether anyone has a similar junked HDD with the same logic board. On the logic board side it has the barcode with PADWD8L7A20697.

If someone has one of these drives and knows if it will work please advise. I am really annoyed I ruined it again.... I wont be able to exchange it again as this is obviously something I have done.

If you need any extra info let me know. I am pretty desperate to be able to get this working again so I can get some photos off without taking it to a professional.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Mine dont spin up till the computer starts to probe the sata controller for whats connected.

As for a board swap, there is a eeprom on them with the drive parameters - you have to swap the contents of that too.

I just desoldered and resoldered them on my seagates when trying a board swap, but apparantly you can get them thru the console port of the drive if that works, or there is a reader that will clip onto the chip directly which is how the pro's do it.

Without swapping the eeprom over, I just got a spin up and stop when powering up.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I tried to let it boot in but it wouldnt recognise it at all.

Then once I put it back in the enclosure it just will not spin at all. I get the USB device showing which is the power and USB part of the enclosure but the drive does not start.

Yeah I have heard it is a little more trouble than its worth trying to change the board... any other help would be good.

I am trying to get the warranty on it again as surely just hooking it into a standard SATA connection in my PC shouldnt fry it.

We shall see I suppose.

Could be the fusable resistors on the board, there are over voltage diodes that will blow the resistors if you overvolt the drive. From what I have seen of the power supplies for most external enlosures, thats a likly occurance.

Yeah however it only happened after I hooked it up to my desktop through the PSU. Maybe there is some way it's given it too much voltage from that. Any suggestions on whether that might be able to be fixed?

The data probably isn't worth getting it retrieved professionally.

Thanks again.
