I have a Q6600 quad processor @ stock speed. (2.5Ghz) CPUTemp detects the temperature for my cpu cores during full load with the side of my case off, around 72-79c. But Speedfan detects the temperature in the 60's. I was just about to go and buy a expensive cooler to keep the heat down but If CPUtemp is wrong theres no point. Why are they both showing different temperatures?

I would be inclined to trust Speedfan, I've been using it for years and its always proved to be accurate for my computers. I am not familiar with CPUTemp, is it showing each core or is it showing an average? Do you run Speedfan as administer (with full rights)?

i used hwmonitor from cpuid. not sure how accurate that is though. dont get the trial version but get the free one.

ah ok. I hope Speedfan shows the correct temperature. Cpu Temp shows the temperature of each core Just like speedfan. Also Speedfan is being run with administrator rights

HwMonitor shows the same temperature as Cpu Temp.

Yeah I would trust Speedfan, those CPU's do heat up quite a bit, I have one in a server that sits at about 65?C most of the time.

If you are using the stock fan, things can heat up a bit more, if you are worried about the temperature it's possibly worth investing in a decent fan or go water cooling.

They might not be measuring the same thing...

There are two 'measures' of CPU temperature, the CPU temp and the core core temp. The difference in temps sound to me like they're in the ballpark for the difference between the two usual temps (my i7's Core temps are around 56 degs but CPU is hovering around 50 degs. I use Coretemp and Speedfan and both match up - though I would have thought speedfan would also list your core temps..!
