At work, I’m currently using Windows XP and Office 2007 with Outlook e-mail client for my e-mails which are stored in a *.pst file.

I am moving on, but need to continue to refer to previous email...My only query, is there a free e-mail client with similar interface as Outlook that also supports *.pst files? I want to able to use the existing *.pst file where all my current e-mails and contacts are stored and be to able to search for an email based on the content of the emails.

I installed Mozilla, but cannot import the .pst files... note the .pst files were on my work PC and I am transferring them to my personal laptop. Mozilla seems to just be looking on the current PC for outlook files.

I also installed Kernal PST viewwe... works well but cannot search based on email content...

Won't it be easier to export the object from PST to another format and archive that instead?

It depends what format your new software will import from, really. My copy of Outlook 2010 only lets me export to csv, Access, Excel, pst and tsv. I guess you'd lose any attachments and formatting?

I don't currently have outlook on the target system, only the source...

Actually, if you still have access to Outlook at work, the other thing you could do is to create/use a Hotmail account, install the Outlook Office Connector configured to this Hotmail account and then copy the email from your PST to the Hotmail account via Outlook Office Connector.

Then at home, use the Windows Live Mail (download) client to connect to your Hotmail account and sync the email. It's then locally stored as eml files, which should be able to be opened in a number of different mail clients - or keep using Windows Live Mail client.

That sounds like another good option, but I'm not allowed to install any software on my work PC... don't have any admin rights.

I downloaded the mailstore client and it appears to work... failing that, I may end up buying an outlook licence...
