Hi I am upgrading my daughters PC
at the moment it has
1Rx8 PC2-5300-555-12  (512)

I am looking at buying a 1g    2Rx8 PC2-5300-555-12


what is the difference in the 1Rx8 and 2Rx8  /\?

1Rx8 usually means the memory chips are only on one side of the pcb. 2 means they are on both sides.

nah, sorry. forgot to add that part of the response.

They should work ok - should being the operative word. Ideally, matched pairs will always work better so depending on the budget it would be better to get 2x1gb sticks.

theoretically there should be no issue at all. practically speaking things like bios support will determine whether or not it will work.

What OS is that PC running? If it is Vista or windows 7, then you should consider getting two 1Gb sticks and discarding the 512, or even better, 2 x 2Gb sticks. If you can't stretch to 2x 2Gb, then at least get one, and plan to upgrade the 512 to another later on.

I doubt they would have been running vista or win7 on 512mb ram.
problem is, being pc2-5300 your options may be limited depending on what is the fastest memory it can support.

the 1x2gb option isn't a bad idea though
