I'm going to be helping a family member with some re-arranging and streamlining of their email soon. They use outlook and are very comfortable using it. I'm wanting to get them a new domain and email and run it through gmail and have it synch with outlook. I understand the best (only?) way to do this is using the imap protocol and I'm just wondering if it's possible to still keep a copy of any email on the local outlook machine as it currently does?
I like to keep the pst backed up incase something goes wrong. Will it be possible to have gmail synching with outlook whilst keeping the emails on the local machine?
The end goal is to get email available on an android handset while keeping outlook running as per normal on the main machine...
Any hints, tips, guides, comments welcome.

You can run pop3 on outlook and keep all the emails on the gmail server. You would just add the gmail account to outlook and ensure you tick the "Leave on server" box during the email account setup in outlook. You also need to enable pop3 in the gmail settings in webmail.

I run google apps with my domain and it comes through three android devices using the standard gmail client and outlook pop on a desktop machine.

Over the last few months I have completely ditched the outlook however and now just use webmail interface. The search feature using webmail is so powerful that I don't use outlook any more.

Do NOT use pop3, its a very antiquated protocol and you lose the advantages of a hosted solution ie keeping a copy of your folders, sent items, deleted items etc.

I'd go with IMAP - Outlook's support for it is marginal though (Windows MAIL is much with IMAP better lol).

Thanks for the replys. Is mail similar to use to outlook? How would I go about getting current emails from the PST file of outlook to either mail or gmail? Is there an option to 'synch' or upload in that direction?
