Hi Boys and Girls ,
Well as the title suggests I want to upgrade my desktop here are my current specs ....

Intel Q6600 Chip { base 2.4 } im ocing mine to 3.2 on air { V8 Cooler }
Asus P5K SE MB
4Gig Cosier DDR2 400 { think this is my bottle neck cant oc machine any more
Sapphire HD6850 GFX card
Windows 7 64 bit

Im a flight simmer and push my machine hard for simming , I havent got FSX as its a piece of crap and no machine on earth can run it without tweeking the buggery out of it , which IMO you shouldnt have to do . Im awaiting the release of MS flight which is still TBC .

I was keen to try AMD again and given I have an AMD GFX Card wanted to try and bring all the system into line ....I have been doing heaps of reading about the new Bulldozer FX 8150 and it seems to fall short quite badly for all its hype , Im happy to go intel and see that the 2600 SB leaves anything AMD has for dead but feel intel are over priced and have a wee monopoly { dont like that ! } so im now open to ideas as the AMD isnt looking that favourable .I was also going to try the sealed AntecH2O 920 water cooler for my new chip or should I just tweek my current machine ?

Cheers
Andrew w

With the current generation of cpu's, intel is better bang for buck at the high end ie: i7 and mid range ie: i5 25xx.

If you were buying right now assuming a mid range budget I would be saying i5 2500k, 8GB ram, Z68 chipset mobo, at least Nvida GTX 560Ti 1GB or Radeon 6950 1GB video card is the way to go.

Since the game isn't out yet, I would advise you to wait till it is... things will be different by then.

Hi Ragnor ,
yes I was going to wait till the game came out but I wont be in a position money wise when it does next year , so I figured it might have to be now ... Im happy to go high end for my chip and MB,Ram Im keen to hold on too my current gfx card as it runs really well and I havent even got into overclocking that , I was looking forward to the 8150 but for bang for your buck its looking more like the 2600 from intel ....that chip has been around a while now and still hasnt really moved much on price in the last 3-6 months .

Cheers

I know this is a somewhat old thread but I feel I should point out that buying an i5 2500k over an 8150 you could come out paying about the same for the M/B + CPU combo.

It comes down to a matter of personal opinion and novelty factor really, There is barely any noticeable difference between the 2 CPU's in benchmarks or usage, the i5 CPU its self is cheap but decent Socket 1155 motherboards appear on average significantly more expensive than AM3+, However on that same note the 8150 is more expensive than the i5 but the motherboards are significantly cheaper.

If uniformity, the novelty of an 8 Core CPU and an inclination to step towards AMD mean anything to you then buy the 8150, Otherwise take the i5.

Alternatively some suggest taking an 8120 and overclock it, Easily becomes an 8150 and saves a good $50-100.

yes some very good points there .... Im wanting to upgrade now as Im not going to be in a poistion next year to upgrade ... the bulk of my desktop puting is mainly flight simming ... video editing ,internet/email . I have been looking at the I7 2600K as this seems to be a gamers chip , its funny how reading all the benchmark testing on the new amd and how it falls short of the mark for gamers , good point about buying the 8120 and then just overclocking it .... but still AMD is let down in other areas ... the other thing with an 8 core CPU is that { just lots of reading I have done } there doesnt seem to be any software written to take advantage of 8 cores ... Im running win 7 64 and again doesnt seem to be written for multicore CPU's please correct me if Im wrong .... the only reason for looking at AMD is yes Price and I also have a Sapphire 6870 graphics card which was bought based on performance and the ability to run 6 monitors { im only running two at the moment } and I was just wondering if there is any difference keeping with one brand .

I too had looked at the I5 2500K as in some bench mark tests it seemed to be right up there .... im also concerned I may have to upgrade my PSU I currently have a silverstone 560W I dont really want to have to replace that as well would like to hold onto it .Also with the upcoming release of MS flight and no real spec floating around at the moment I have to take a gamble { I would prefer not to upgrade yet but as I said my hand has been forced a bit } thanks again to all those who have posted I would love to hear from anyone who has the new AMD 8150 or 8120 as overclocking them looks to be fun .

Cheers
