Hi,

I recently bought an Acer n50 premium pda and I'm very pleased with it so far.

I want to use it to connect to the internet via my home PC and share its broadband connection.

I have a Belkin USB Bluetooth adapter.

Ive done the basic set up stuff but cannot connect.

I read your article http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?contentid=1421

which is very good. All was going well up until the screenshot of Bluetooth Manager.

Mine doesnt look like that. When I click New I get:

Explore a Bluettoth Device

Connect to the Internet via phone - not Connect to the Internet

Why is this?

I have Windows Mobile 2003 second edition Version 4.21.1008

If your device is running Windows Mobile 2003 then it is most likely using the Widcomm software. You just ned to tap on Explore a Bluetooth Device, and you will see the services offered by your computer. If you PC's configuration is correct (like in this article) then you should see an option to connect to the network. Simply keep following the guide from there.

Thanks for that.

I found Explore Bluetooth Device and made a shortcut.

When I try to connect using the shortcut I get a little notification bubble pop up on my computer and the connection seems to be made but when I go to Internet Explorer it asks me for a username, password and domain.

I dont know what to put in there.

Any suggestions?

Don't enter anything - leave empty and check the box to remember these settings.

Ok. I followed that instruction and I get a message pop up saying the pocket PC is connected via bluetooth to the PC.

On the Pocket PC it says:

Connecting
Connecting to Dial-up (BTNetwork)
Using Bluetooth Null Modem
Dialing: Connect...

and it just stays there.

The light is flashing on my Bluetooth adapter.

Ive left it ten minutes but eventually have to tap cancel

In the details it says:

. Waiting for Device

Connection Established

x Unable to establish a connection. Please make sure
the device is enabled and in range. Also verify that the
service is available.

I dont know what to try next.

At this stage I'd look into firewall software on your computer, and read this article.

OK We have some progress.

I entered the username and password for my ISP connection into the pocket PC.

I configured DNS for my Bluetooth device to 192.168.0.1

Now I can connect to the internet.
It says Connecting. I get a brief window which says Dialing and then it connects.
In active connections I get a strong signal in Outgoing Connections.

However, if I go to Internet Explorer on my Pocket PC I'm unable to browse.

If I enter aURL and tap go it says:

The page you are looking for cannot be found.

The internet explorer help says I should follow the instructions to add a new modem connection.

Which means choose a modem from the list and then enter the phone number to be dialled.

This doesnt make sense to me

So close......

You should not need to enter any username or password. On your Bluetooth configuration you should enter your ISP's DNS address since 192.168.0.1 is an internal address and it's most likely you don't have a DNS running on your network - hence the "can not locate server" message.

Ive re-read the article and dont find any help there.

I deleted the connections and created new ones - this time not using a username and password because it didnt ask me for them.

I changed the DNS settings on my bluetooth device to those which showed up as my dns server number when I did ipconfig /all

I get the same result. I can connect but cant browse

The trouble seems to be with Internet Explorer on the Pocket PC which seems to not accept there is a connection active and expects me to set up a modem or VPN connection afresh.

Any suggestions very welcome

I will summarise the steps here, basically the same as in the article, nothing else really:

- make sure the DNS on your Bluetooth virtual adapter is the one from the ISP
- make sure there's no IP configuration on your Pocket PC it should all be automatic
- make sure the Bluetooth adapter is 192.168.0.1
- make sure there is no IP address conflict with other devices/computers on your network
- make sure firewall software is not blocking communications
- make sure AV software is not blocking communications
- make sure to run welcome.exe on your Pocket PC to correctly configure it
- make sure to install VxUtil on your Pocket PC and test connections (ping to a known server via name and via IP address)
- make sure there is no username or password on this new connection
- make sure the Bluetooth is configured as Internet Sharing, not LAN Access

That's prett much it. In all my tests, with a variety of laptops and desktops, I got these working on the first attempt, but always checking these things.

Also, if you are having problems, simply establish a Bluetooth ActiveSync and your device will automatically be connected throught the ActiveSync Passthrough feature.

I will work my way through your list and report back shortly.

On your second point I was able to connect to the internet and browse with my pda in its cradle using Activesync pass through.

However my Bluetooth adapter doesnt have Actvivesync as an option - or at least I cant find it.

I'm using Windows 2000. Is it only available on XP?

There's no Bluetooth ActiveSync service. You need to define an incoming Serial port on your Bluetooth configuration (which always have one by default) and change the ActiveSync Connection Settings (on your desktop) to match the same port. Then create the pairing from the Pocket PC.

Ah success at last!

Using Activesync via a COM port I am now able to walk around my house and browse the net.

Excellent!

I must say this stuff is a bit more complicated than it ought to be

but still very pleased.
