invisibleman18: So will this not work on Vodafone or is it just coming to Spark first?

Hi,

It will work on Vodafone, although not their 700mhz 4G band, only Sparks 700mhz 4G band. It will work on all other Vodafone 2G/3G/4G bands

Shoes2468:
BrentR: The Spark 830 will support their 700mhz 4G band.

Does this mean that inherently this device will work on other carriers 700mhz 4G when it is deployed also?

Unfortunately sorry. It will work on Sparks 700Mhz 4G band only. All other 4G (1800/2600) bands will be fine though.

So has Spark locked out band 28 for other providers? Or have they got some weird configuration on their network, perhaps running US 700 too or something?

Within 700MHz Band 28 both Vodafone and Spark have different split of frequencies.

Yes, but band 28 is still band 28. If you have a band 28 network, you'd expect a band 28 phone to work, or a band 28 phone you'd expect to work on a band 28 network. Or do we now have band fragmentation? Is there a band 28a and a band 28b etc?

Looks like they have updated the Specs for NZ on the MS website.
"LTE FDD network: Band 1 (2100 MHz), Band 20 (800MHz), Band 28 (700MHz), Band 3 (1800 MHz), Band 7 (2600 MHz), Band 8 (900MHz)"

So basically no reason for it not to work on other LTE 700 band 28 networks other than the Spark variant has locked out LTE for other providers?

If that's true that's lame... can I buy a direct from MS NZ version that doesn't have that limitation?

Oeo: Looks like a charging plate is bundled with the Lumia 830 cool:

Just went into the Spark store today and had a chat to the manager. He said that they should have some in stock by Thurs/Fri this week and that the general retail  one (not just the business link above) will definitely come with the Wireless Charging Plate too laughing

There is a Band A and B, with Spark using Band B, there is no "locking out" Spark bought more spectrum than other parties. This handset variant was built for this band.

I'm getting one of these for Xmas (apparently) can't wait.

But is it going to be stocked at any stores other than Spark ones? I know Harvey Norman are not going to be stocking it.

OK, that makes some sense now; though the specs here http://www.microsoft.com/en-nz/mobile/phone/lumia830/ still say Band 28, rather than Band 28B.
So what is the technical reason for this phone only do half the band?
What band is Vodafone then? 28A I guess?

yeah that doesn't really make sense, there is no such mention of this for iPhones. Sounds like old fashion phone locking to me.

It's NOT locked. As I already said earlier, it works on both Vodafone and 2 Degrees other 2/3/4G bands perfectly fine, this is simply a hardware limitation on this particular handset.

Apple have always impressed me with their RF engineers abilities to squeeze such a large variety of frequency spread into their later handsets, it is quite phenomenal!

Spark have ranged this handset because it works for their network spread, not for how it may work with other local networks.
