So, my employer is changing mobile providers, and I've used the opportunity to ask for a Nokia WP8 device. They were forthcoming until I realised that with some exceptions, Nokia WP8 is not available in New Zealand. I mean, sure they are on the Nokia NZ website, but no one stocks them (parallel importers aside).
The only two devices available are the overspec'ed 920 and the underspec'ed 520. Where the heck is the entire mid range? 610, 620, 800, 820 are not in stock at any major retailer or telco. What's going on here?

As an example, 2Degrees only have the Samsung Ativ in stock - that's hardly multiple. And a business may not be negotiating with the provider directly, it can be a reseller who doesn't have the access to all devices in the provider's range.

I am not sure of their stock levels, but I do know that they carry Huawei Ascend W1 and Samsung Ativ S. Sometime in May they were also meant to add Black Nokia Lumia 520.

Only the Ativ is available online. And a single device hardly matches the needs of an entire company. Look, the bottom line is that WP8 phones are good devices. I've had the opportunity to test the first engineering sample of the LG WP7 at the time and thought it was absolute crap, so I know first hand that WP came a long long way since then. There is absolutely no reason for companies not to adopt WP as the primary device, particularly if their software infrastructure is MS-based. The only problem is that the devices are unavailable. When a major telco like 2Degrees carries a single WP device in its entire range, it's a ridiculous situation. My problem though isn't just the WP availability in general - it's the Nokia WP8 midrange unavailability that pisses me off.

What is your problem with buying the phone from one Telco and putting somebody else's SIM into it?

2D were very helpful to me in this regard; even sending out a Micro SIM directly to me because our local reseller were out of stock.
