So, my employer is changing mobile providers, and I've used the opportunity to ask for a Nokia WP8 device. They were forthcoming until I realised that with some exceptions, Nokia WP8 is not available in New Zealand. I mean, sure they are on the Nokia NZ website, but no one stocks them (parallel importers aside).
The only two devices available are the overspec'ed 920 and the underspec'ed 520. Where the heck is the entire mid range? 610, 620, 800, 820 are not in stock at any major retailer or telco. What's going on here?

Nokia's WP8 line-up includes 520, 620, 720, 820 & 920 that is currently available in the market. Through mobile providers in NZ you can get the 520, 820 and 920. You can buy the 620 from Noel Leeming and 720 from The Warehouse.

Nokia Lumia 610 and 800 you have listed above are last years WP7 models which of-ourse are now discontinued.

If it was this easy I probably wouldn't have asked the question, right? Apologies though, where I said 820 I meant 720.
Here is a quick search from this morning:

Noel Leeming: 520, 820, 920
Harvey Norman: 520, 920
The Warehouse: 520, 720 (yellow only!)
The Warehouse Stationary: 710
Telecom: 520, 920
2Degrees: none
Vodafone: 520, 820

Back to my question. Where the heck is the middle range?!

Perhaps call the store(s) you are interested in buying the phone from. Most of them will order anything you'd like on request.

They were probably expecting to sell 2 and sold 3 by mistake, so Nokia had to make some more ;)

I'm hoping my employer will go in the WP direction soon, or at least BYOD. The Windows Phone devices seem very nice and well suited as a corporate phone, including email.

Exactly right. A mid-range Nokia WP8 would be a perfect match for my needs. Only I can't seem to find one.

One aspect that is not well suited to the corporate environment is WP8 has very limited notification tones so one phone gets a message and three people instantly check their handsets! Additional ringtones can be downloaded but not message or email notifications

One ringtone or twenty, I can't care less. I've had my HTC for a year now and I never bothered to change from the default ringtone - it's just something I don't care about (I do care about it being a crap phone though).

The bottom line is that I want to buy a midrange Nokia WP8 and I want to know where I can buy it, and if I can't by it New Zealand - why not?

hmm...i think if you want to get a mid range WP8 phone, you should have checked out HTC 8S that Harvey Norman had on sale until this weekend. It was for 299. I was looking at picking this one up. I was actually going to go to warehouse stationery and ask them to do a price match and beat it.

But again, you wanted a mid range Nokia device. Ya it is quite annoying that there arent more of them available. Lumia 820 - you can purchase this from expansys.co.nz for less than 400 bucks and get it imported into nz without paying any GST.

But about buying from local resellers..dont have much options..

The Warehouse has both the Yellow and Black model in stock of the Lumia 720.

We have over 60 WP8 devices in our organization. HTC 8S (now discontinued), Samsung Ativ S and Nokia Lumia 520. No complaints unlike iOS or Android users who actually get their AD accounts get locked out every time they change the password on their workstation but forget to do it on their smartphones or tablet. They in turn try and access the mail server and Wi-Fi RADIUS server with old credentials and AD accounts are locked! None of this issue with WP8 and Windows 8 machines. Instead of locking the AD accounts, it actually prompts you on the screen to enter your new password. User's don't have to go looking for it like they do on iOS and Android. Those that wanted VPN, I set them up with Gen-I's PAPN solution.

True, I missed it because they don't have an image for it on their website (which is ridiculous tbh).
The issues you described above is exactly the reason I don't use my Android tablet anymore. And I am pretty sure WP8 isn't going to have any of these issues.

What pisses me off is that our IT team had no say in the selection of the new mobile provider, so we ended up with one which carries no WP8 devices. And naturally they had no say on what devices are provided to staff either.

Which mobile carrier are you talking about here? All 3 major NZ Telco's carry multiple WP8 devices.

As an example, 2Degrees only have the Samsung Ativ in stock - that's hardly multiple. And a business may not be negotiating with the provider directly, it can be a reseller who doesn't have the access to all devices in the provider's range.

I am not sure of their stock levels, but I do know that they carry Huawei Ascend W1 and Samsung Ativ S. Sometime in May they were also meant to add Black Nokia Lumia 520.
