(The PDA Otherwise Known As An XDA)

This has to be an extraordinarily inept piece of non-marketing by Vodafone NZ.

So far the only sign I've seen that this device is present in NZ is a list item and associated link on their PDAs page. No sign of any promotion or even mention anywhere else.

To add insult to injury, the page that contains the details for the Qtek 1010 has an incorrect "TITLE" tag in the HTML, which actually says "Vodafone - Mobiles - Compaq IPAQ H3870 - Main Features". So that is what appears in bookmark entries, and that is what search engines will list (the page in question even has the same tag in a comment accompanied by "These are put here so that search engine can pick them up"...which obviously wasn't read by the person who cloned this page from an iPAQ version. I emailed Vodafone to politely point this out (carefully omitting any condescending nerdy sarcasm), but I just got the standard "someone will be in touch within 2 days" or whatever, and then they obviously ignored it. Quite possibly the person who handles email from the web site doesn't understand what HTML is. Next to this it is a minor point that the custom Vodafone Today screen is the only one I've ever seen that manages to make one of these devices look ugly.

But to return (at length, and after an extended grizzle) to my main point, does anybody else here in New Zealand know whether Vodafone is really serious about selling these things and what the story might be with the appalling promotion to date?

It's all a bit of a shame, because as for someone who's leapt into Compact Framework development (it fits nicely since I work with .NET fulltime at work), I see the PPC Phone Edition devices as an ideal platform for the delivery of web services to mobile devices...but there won't be any market if nobody knows they exist.

Good point, KevDaly.

I've seem the device myself, but didn't have the opportunity to have one for a test drive, yet. Actually I haven't seen any in stores, only on the website.

I'll try and chase more info on this and keep you all posted...

It's also rather amusing how they list the RRP of the Handspring Visor Edge as being $799. It appears to have similar features to my Palm m125, which would now be worth under $500. $799? I don't think so!

Is the price of $2249 on the Qtek realistic, or could it be found for a more reasonable price?

Hmmm... I don't know where else it's being sold. I know some companies could get it through the distribution channel (Tech Pacific I think) if they have a business account with them.

... Found it here too:

Logical Systems at NZ$1999 excl, with GST and S&H it's NZ$ 2265.76.

Rocom lists it as well, with other products, but the details page comes blank...

Monotapu lists it for NZ$ 1755 excl.

Also, Vodafone did do a big advertising campaign with the QTek 1010 a few months back. I remember ads over a period of some weeks in the Herald for them.

Yes, Ascent is quite good, and if you live in the Wellington area you can buy over the net and collect direct from them at their Willis St address...

how can i connect the Qtek 1010 to PC as a modem to connect to the internet through the GPRS network , my mobile network offers a very decent GPRS connection (18 KB downloads) at a relatively low flat rate, i would be great if i could use this speed with my pc instead of the poor old dialup.....

Thanx in advance ...

There is a company in Australia which has a very good invoice and credit card payments option for the Qtek 1010. www.microe.com.au or email to stansen@microe.com.au

Hope this helps
