hello everybody

i have had this gadget for 3 yr, using it as a ppc and as a navigator, working fine until 2 weeks ago; maybe i made a mistake by soft reseting it while it was in cradle. now i cannot connect/sync it with desktop. when i connect it to the usb hub, the green wheel spinns around and around forever then disconnects.

I connect it to a different pc. i got the same results. I did soft reset, hard reset, uninstalled and reinstalled activesync, I installed the latest activesync to no avail. I changed the usb port and cable connected to the pc directly. no difference. when I connect it to my pc the activesync window says connecting. under usb it says connected; it is not actually connected, then it disconnects, the activesync window says *no partnerships*. when you click on file in activesync window the mobile device and partnership are grayed out i.e you cannot do anything with them.

Just not to forget, once you connect the ppc to the usb it is detected-hardware is attached to the computer, and is ready for use. then the green wheel starts spinning but nothing else. partnership is not created and with my humble thinking and experience no file conversions available.

I have combed the net with various formulae of the above puzzle and i have seen similar problems raised by other people, probably identical problem, no one seems to have an answer. toshiba don't have ROM update for toshiba e740 for systems using SP2. i am running of ideas. i will be most grateful if someone gives me a real hope for sorting out this frustrating situation and I am sorry for giving too much details.

I think you have two problems there but the one to fix now is the one related to the latest ActiveSync. You should not be using the ActiveSync 4.x with older Windows Mobile devices - there's no advantage and it may cause problems. My sugestions below:

- uninstall ActiveSync, reboot and reinstall the ActiveSync from the original CD;
- hard reset the device
- make sure any software firewall is correctly configured to allow AcitveSync access to all and any ports
- if ActiveSync is listed on your firewall, delete it and let it recreate the rules if needed
- plug directly to a USB port and never to a USB Hub.

pocketpclover: Thanks very much for your help. I faithfully followed the above 5 steps. Unfortunately I got the same result. Let me tell you the steps, you will probably find out where the fault is.

 In the first occasion while I am installing activesync (original CD) copying files, updating system, then a window came up Registry setting failed. One or more registry settings is not finished, activesync may not function properly until these settings have been created. Setup will now continue. I clicked on OK. Firewall blocked it initially then gave me an option to unblock it, I did. When I connected the toshiba to the USB directly( without the HUB) a window came up WCEUSBSH.SYS is missing. I did a search files, I found it it worked to recognise the hardware. The green wheel started spinning, no promping to partnerships until it disconnected.

 In the second occasion I restarted the whole process from the begining, I got the same results but no mention of WCEUSBH.SYS. The green wheel started spinning with the same end result.

In fact I tried it for the third time it reproduced the same results of the second occasion.

 I hope I made it clear you are able to find out the reason for my dilemma.

Your help is appreciated.
