I searched these forums but no recent thread was directly relevant.

Can anyone here offer up to date local experience with the Nokia HERE

Transit, Drive, and Maps apps for a non-Nokia WP8 mobile phone please?

I am shopping for a WP8 phone, unlocked and to be used prepay, and

attracted to the discounted Samsung ATIV S with 4.8" screen, offered

at a few local businesses for $299 now that the model is over a year old.

Would I be able to download in NZ those apps I list above to a Samsung?

I don't mind paying a reasonable fee if necessary.

HERE Maps is free for all Windows Phone 8 users in countries where HERE Drive or HERE Drive+ are available.

HERE Drive and HERE Transit are free to use on any Windows Phone 8 device in the US, Canada, Mexico, UK, Germany, France, Italy or Spain.

If you’re not from one of the above countries, you can buy HERE Drive+ from Windows Phone Store. If you are a non-Nokia Windows Phone 8 user from Australia, China, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Norway or Russia, you can buy HERE Transit from the Windows Phone 8 Store.

Is a lumia 520 not an option (at $199 or so)?

In regards to how those apps go - Drive/Maps are pretty much spot on all the times I have used them.

And transit is very nice if you are in a city that it has data for (aka not Dunedin), was useful in Wellington when I visited for the week.

Thanks for the prompt response with the software information.

Exactly what I wanted to know but couldn't find for myself.

As for the suggestion of the popular Lumia 520; as good an item

of kit as it may be, the screen is just not big enough for me.

Do other people find a 4.0" display useable for following on-screen maps?

How about upping your budget and going for a Nokia Lumia 1320 6" Phablet? Can be had for $448 incl

As the owner of the Atix S, if you specifically want the here maps suite, get a Nokia. You could try find a 625 as well. Not great resolution, but a nice big screen. Windows phone is pretty dire in the free gps department. I really wish Microsoft would put some focus on Bing maps and make it a good GPS app.

I have a 520 and use the HERE maps etc with no issues, find the screen fine. But if I had a 1320 first, probably wouldnt be any way Id go back to the 4" screen.

I have a 925 and my mum has a 520. The screen size on the 520 doesn't bother me (and is fine for mapping) but the actual image quality is poor in comparison. Once you go Clearblack you never go back. It's a phone that has been designed to be cheap and some aspects of it reflect this.

The Ativ S is the opposite. A phone designed to flagship specs and quality (basically a GS3 running WP8), but being an old model so you can get it super cheap.

As the others suggested there are other Nokia's worth considering. The 720, 1320 and 925 would be my picks and all sit between $300-500. I wouldn't go for the 625 as it doesn't have the Clearblack polarisation but YMMV.

I guess you have to figure out what's most important: Nokia mapping apps, a big good quality display, or a phone for under $300. If I were you I'd get a 720, still pretty cheap with a nice display and all the Nokia bells and whistles.
