Helmi_c at ppcgeeks.com has released a WM6 ROM for the Apache with support for Telecom NZ. I'm downloading it now and will let you all know how it does.

Initial reports are that its a lot faster then WM5 and the release is stable.

PS. this is not a Telecom supported ROM so if you go and get it, its at your own risk.

Up and running with WM6! I have to say that my first impressions are IT ROCKS!

Just performing my first sync with my work Exchange server. Moving around the device is indeed very snappy and it looks fantastic. If you have an Apache, do yourself a favour and try this ROM.

I'll update this post if I have any issues.

I had been waiting for that when I had my Apache. I messed round with my own ROM but I only got so far with it.

Helmi is a genius when it comes to building ROMs. Has it made the Apache much more stable than it was with WM5?

I have been playing with it all morning with no issues at all.

One cool thing is that 99% of apps close completely when exited - i.e. you dont have to check running programs to kill them.

The new today screen looks fantastic - I think he has used the new HTC TouchFlo interface. One handed operation is well improved over WM5 and did I mention its FAST!

Still need to test bluetooth and wmodem which I will try and get to later today.

It's a hack and not official but I'll certainly be trying it! I found enough parts to scrap together a bit of a sad Apache.

"Tinpot" telco? What the $%^$ is that?

Three questions please:
1> Can this be installed using Vista, or do I need to find a XP install with ActiveSync to be able to run the installer
2> If I brick it, I assume I just need to use the 2.2AKU from Telecom's site to rebuild?
3> Can anybody recommend a tool (preferably free) that will let me backup my SMSs and call-logs, but that can installed NOW not before I start collecting them...

I just installed it using Vista and it went without a hitch. But I haven't seen anywhere mentioning the need for ActiveSync or WMDC 'only' connections. So I'd say give it a try.

No you can't. A hard reset will just reinstall WM6

I bricked mine when I upgraded to AKU3.3 (Leason - read all instructions like use mains power doh!) I got it back by just reflashing with the official AKU from Tcom. So if you are worried then make sure you have a copy of the official ROM handy.

Although in saying that this is a pretty much idiot proof method.

More thoughts.

Love the HTC Home addon for the today screen. The update is worth it just for this IMHO. I am now fully useing one handed operation for everything and all the on screen buttons are thumb size so no miss hits.

I see that HTC are using this with the new touchflo interface that requires hardware to fully appreciate but even without the hardware it is a really nice interface to work with.

If time permits I may blog about the whole experince in more detail with screenshots - although I'm sure this can be found elseware also i.e. ppcgeeks.com or xda-developers. While I'm at it big ups to both sites and the maker of this ROM, Helmi_c, without these we would still have a device with no reliable wmodem (see AKU3.3-3.5 if this is all you want fixed).

IMHO the Apache is a great phone/PDA and with this update it has totally been brought up to date without having to pay out for new hardware.

You guys realise that this ROM is breaking HTC copyright? The touchflo UI is HTC's IP property, and adding it to a ROM is breach of copyright. I am locking this thread now. Sorry...
