big news this week, that sony is to stop selling Clie's in the US.. no mention of what this means for the rest of the world -- this is cut and paste from PPCT:

"Sony has informed us that they will not release any new Clie PDAs this year in the US. The Clie line will continue in Japan though. This move is of course devastating for a number of reasons. We have all the details along with five different takes on what this move means to the PDA world. We had a conference call with Sony last week to discuss what we thought was going to be about the new Clie releases, hopefully something with OS 6. Much to our chagrin, Sony started by reading a very brief statement that clearly indicated their intent to vacate the PDA space in the US for at least the remainder of this year."

The quote is from BargainPDA, replicated on PPCT. I think Sony lost focus with so many models at the same time, users always waiting to buy the "next" big thing, which would always be out every two months or so (or so it seemed).

All references to Sony's announcement only refer to leaving the US, and continuing in Japan...

Not really. I actually haven't published anything about it because I couldn't find any official word. I think the rest of the world will lust over all the new Sony handhelds when they're launched in Japan...

it's been nothing more than a rumour fo so long...

the other juicy rumours i hear, is Sony is in talks to use Pocket PC.
and PalmOne are also looking seriously @ ditching PalmSrc's Palm OS. - all bad news for us penguins.

like i say - still only rumours, but my source hasn't been wrong yet.
