Just having a look at a Lumia 830 so I went into Spark and I was informed that they've had a lot of returns for Nokia Lumia phones - how true is that claim? All the reviews online seem to say it is a pretty good middle of the road device but I'm wondering what others here think.

Did they expand on why the handsets were being returned?

Its a great device, it performs very well and the camera is great. I have one, but at the moment it is returned, due to a small screen lifting off issue.
Other than that, I would recommend it.  I think the reason why people might be returning the Lumias is due to apps, there are more and more big name apps appearing all the time, and with the release of Windows Phone 10 in the future and the whole universal app thing, you should see the phone being very well supported.

KiwiNZ: Did they expand on why the handsets were being returned?

Just said 'to get repaired' but didn't go much into it then when I probed it appeared to be more people buying a low end device then complaining that it doesn't perform like a flagship device.

I'm wondering whether it was "yeah, yeah bro, its like busted 'n stuff" when it was because they couldn't get some game they wanted on the phone. I'll go in and have another look - is the 'free gift' an online only option or can I get it at the store?

I'd probably say it is more along the lines of 'push the product of a known quantity than taking risk resulting in an unsatisfied customer'.

Oh well, got a Dell desktop on its way but I'm still wondering about getting a Surface Pro 3 for a laptop.

I've had an 830 for about 4 months and it's great, highly recommend.

I'd take sales staff comments with grain of salt, I've been told by them not to buy WP even though I'm saying I already on WP and love it, just looking to upgrade.... so went and brought online cheaper :)

There has always been a level of brand bias at Spark be it in the retail or enterprise sectors. I experienced this when buying for myself and dealing with Spark Digital and previous entities  Gen-i and Computerland. On the Spark web site Apple features prominently it is also prominent at the Spark Stores along with Samsung.
I would take the comments made by the Spark staff with grain of salt and do ones own research.

I have a WP Lumia 635 as my work phone and to be honest, it is excellent.

Yes - I have an iPhone as a personal phone, but to be honest, if the WP was all I had, I'd be happy.

I think you're right - there's an element of bias and also an expectation from some users that mid-level phones will work like flagships...also the apps are a big deal to some.

ooooh nathan thats pretty vague! ;). My workplace is heavily microsoft, they offered me a 1020 6 months ago but i turned them down purely on the app front. I hope this announcement is in fact "major" and not just a couple of well loved android/ios apps are coming to WP.

When I upgraded my phone last year I opted for the iPhone 5s, after coming THIS close <pinches fingers together> to getting the 920. Like you, it was the lack of apps that put me off. In particular, not having a native internet banking app sealed the deal for me. The iPhone one would be one of my most used apps.

8 weeks is a long time to wait, tell us now ;)

As for the 830, mine is in for repair and I miss using it. Compared to my old S3, its great.  If anyone is debating whether to buy one. You should. Its half the price of an iPhone, has a 5 inch screen which being only 720p is very sharp and clear and its  very fluid to use, and the battery life is great.

I've heard of a couple of the really cheap 520s having issues with their buttons wearing out.  So that may be their 'lumias'.   The 520s are amazing for the price, but the build quality IS cheaper.

Warning: reality may differ from above post
